As politicians talk, NJ takes the initiative

While state leaders talk about helping New York’s ailing racing industry, New Jersey’s bold new $1 million-per-day program is at the starting gate, with horsemen chomping at the bit to join in.

Monmouth Park’s 50-day, weekends-only meet begins Saturday with 13 races. Seven of those have full 12-horse fields and the Jersey Shore track has had to turn some horses away.

Meanwhile, the Saratoga Race Course season remains in limbo as New York Racing Association awaits a state loan it needs to keep from closing.
