Trainer Louie Roussel, III recorded his 1,000th career training victory in Friday’s fourth race at Arlington International Racecourse with his homebred Heavens Whisper.

“Thanks, and praise the Lord,” Roussel said. “Everyone has been so kind to me my whole life in this business. I want to thank the valets, the gate crew, the exercise guys, the jockeys, the grooms and the hot-walkers. It’s them, it’s not me. I was just lucky enough to be here today.”

The 71-year-old Louisiana native scored his first career training win in 1967 before going on to condition 1988 Eclipse Champion 3-year-old Risen Star to victories in the Grade I Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Together with his family, Roussel owned and operated Fair Grounds Race Course from 1977-1990. In 1996 he captured the Grade II American Derby at Arlington with Juanatxo. Roussel finished fifth in the standings at Arlington last year with 18 wins from 58 starts, a strike rate of 31%.
