Aqueduct cancels Sunday card as cold weather continues
The New York Racing Association canceled live racing Sunday at Aqueduct because of arctic temperatures forecast to impact the New York metropolitan area throughout the day.
Sunday’s feature race, the $100,000 Rego Park, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds, will be brought back Jan. 28 with entries to be taken Thursday. Aqueduct also canceled its Saturday card.
The National Weather Service forecast said it will be sunny in New York on Sunday with a high near 31 degrees. Wind chill values are expected to be between 10 and 20 degrees.
Live racing is scheduled to resume Friday at Aqueduct. First post is 12:20 p.m. EST.
Cold weather also prompted Laurel Park to cancel its Saturday and Sunday programs. Racing at the Maryland track is scheduled to resume Friday.
The domino effect of the fierce cold also led Oaklawn to push the Grade 3, $800,000 Southwest Stakes, its next Kentucky Derby 2024 prep, back a week to Feb. 3.
