Riding a debut runner who broke inward from the post 1, ran into a temporary rail and reared, jockey Kendrick Carmouche got 3-year-old colt Crimson Light’s act together to rally from 23 lengths behind for an unlikely victory Sunday in the fourth race at Aqueduct.

Made the even-money favorite in a field of seven, the son of City of Light fashioned quite the story on the chart written by Equibase for the $70,000 race for New York-bred maidens going 6 1/2 furlongs on the sealed slop.

“Crimson Light veered in at the start, brushing the gate and then striking the temporary railing while bucking a bit under correction,” the chart said. “Conceded at minimum 20 lengths to the leader before settling into stride when guided outside six to seven paths off the rail, chased detached at the tail of the field tucking three to four wide through the turn, went eight wide into upper stretch, drifted out, straightened away two to three paths mimicking the drifting of Shore Time in front and to his inside.

“Rallied with good courage and good energy to close stoutly on the outside, coming in slightly when corrected from drifting to trade a bump with Shore Time, who came outwards 40 yards from the finish, and was up in the final jumps to score.”

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Crimson Light was bred in New York by South Gate Farm. Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm paid $280,000 for him when he was a yearling.
