Apprentice jockey Samy Camacho was sent to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, N.J. after being unseated by his mount Stategic Command just before the finish line in Saturday’s second race at Monmouth Park.
“He needed further evaluation for a head and lower extremity injury,” said Dr. Angelo Chinnici, Medical Director at Monmouth Park. “He was alert after the incident, but I sent him for X-rays to make sure everything checked out okay.”
Stategic Command, a 4-year-old filly, broke down nearing the wire and was euthanized on the racetrack following the incident.
A 24-year-old native of Venezuela, Camacho was 11th in the Monmouth Park standings going into Saturday’s card. From 120 mounts, he has piloted 11 winners this meet.
