Apprehender Takes Charge in King Cotton
Dream Farm LLC’s Apprehender, who briefly tested the waters in Oaklawn’s 2012 3-year-old stakes series, returned to Hot Springs for his 4-year-old debut and showed he’s much better suited for the sprint division with his victory in Saturday’s $60,000 King Cotton Stakes.
Apprehender assumed the lead shortly after the break and proceeded to lead the field through early fractions of 22 1/5 and 45 3/5 for the first half mile, while holding a narrow advantage. However, once he reached the top of the stretch and jockey Alex Birzer gave him the cue, the Posse gelding kicked into another gear and drew off to win by one length over the 5-2 favorite Alsvid, who had defeated him in their two previous meetings at Remington Park last year. The winner completed the six furlongs in 1:10 over the fast track.
Laurie’s Rocket was third and was followed by Bet the Power, Hamazing Destiny and Ready For More.
“He’s really matured,” said trainer Chris Richard. “He’s put on weight. Even this past summer he was a little immature looking for a 3-year-old. He’s made a nice transition from three to four. He’s such a nice horse to be around. He gives you a shot every time you lead him over. Alsvid is a very nice horse. We’re ecstatic to beat him.”
The King Cotton marked the first stakes victory for Apprehender, who improved his career record to 5-3-1 in 11 starts and he has now earned $206,433. He returned $8.20, $3.40 and $2.60. Richard said Apprehender would likely make his next start in the $60,000 Hot Springs Stakes March 23.
