Anthony's Cross Nips Riveting Reason in Lewis

Anthony's Cross, always well placed in his first start wearing blinkers, got his nose down on the line to nip Riveting Reason in the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Heavy favorite Tapizar refused to relax under Garrett Gomez and faded to finish a disappointing 5th.

Headstrong colt Tapizar fought Gomez through quick splits of :22.48 and :45.64. He was joined on the lead by eventual winner Anthony's Cross after six furlongs in 1:09.92. The overwhelming favorite was breathing fire at this stage and Riveting Reason picked up the chase.

Anthony's Cross and Riveting Reason battled through the lane with the former just lasting by a desperate nose under Joel Rosario's strong handling.

With Tapizar out of the money the show pools opened up. Anthony's Cross paid $18.60, $8, and $15.60. Riveting Reason was good for $7.60 and $15.20. Quail Hill lit up the show tote at $48.60.

Thirtyfirststreet rallied from last to complete the superfecta and was followed by Tapizar, Wegner, and Ten Devils.

The winner, by Indian Charlie out of an Unbridled mare, was bred in Pennsylvania by George Strawbridge Jr. He is trained by Eoin Harty and earned $150,000 for his win on Saturday.
