Anothertwistafate on the map with El Camino Real Derby romp
Anothertwistafate proved himself more than your average Northern California-based colt on Saturday, romping with a front-running win in the $100,000 El Camino Real Derby.
Not only did the Blaine Wright-trained son of Scat Daddy stamp himself as a 2019 Kentucky Derby prospect, but he earned a fees-paid berth into the second leg of the Triple Crown series, the Preakness Stakes, with the victory.
Under jockey Juan Hernandez, the Blaine Wright trainee broke on top, going wire to wire in a final time of 1:50.38. Along the way, he fended off Southern California invader Kingly, the Bob Baffert-trained brother of Mohaymen, setting fractions of 23.39 and 49.09.
Anothertwistafate separated himself off the far turn, then opened up in the lane, skipping across the all weather surface over which he’s now 3-for-3. While defeated in his debut at Santa Anita, Anothertwistafate galloped to local maiden special weight and allowance optional claiming wins before scoring in Golden Gate’s signature race.
Behind Kingly, who was seven lengths back of the winner, more Ice and Angelo’s Pride ran a distant third and fourth, respectively. The El Camino Real Derby paid out Derby qualifying points on a 10-4-2-1 basis to the Top 4 finishers.
Anothertwistafate went off as the 6-5 favorite in the field of 11.
