Amazombie, The Factor Face Off in Bing Crosby
Amazombie, the 2011 Breeders’ Cup and Eclipse Award sprint champion faces 2011 Del Mar Sprinter of the Meeting The Factor
Amazombie, a 6-year-old California-bred gelding co-owned and trained by Bill Spawr, has 11 wins from 26 career starts and more than $1.7 million in career earnings. Last fall, the son of Northern Afleet out of the In Excess mare Wilshe Amaze followed up a victory in the Grade I Ancient Title at Santa Anita with one in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint and was later voted the Eclipse Award signifying preeminence in the division in North America.
Prior to the Ancient Title, Amazombie was third in the Bing Crosby, which was the first of three straight starts at his preferred 6-furlong distance.
The Factor, owned by Bolton and Fog City Stable and trained by Bob Baffert, nailed down Del Mar’s sprint honors for 2011 with a win in the 7-furlong Pat O’Brien Stakes.
The Factor was first, and Amazombie third in the 7-furlong San Carlos Handicap at Santa Anita on February 12, the 2012 debut for both. The Factor was sixth of 12 in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen in March in the United Arab Emirates and second to Camp Victory in the Triple Bend at Hollywood Park on June 12.
