Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who got a
"double wow" on Belmont Stakes day when It's Tricky upset Turbulent
Descent in the Grade 1 TVG Acorn and Trappe Shot took the Grade 2 True
North presented by Emirates Airline, is hoping Alseera will make it a
triple in next Saturday's Grade 1 Mother Goose at Belmont Park.
"It's
a step up, but maybe we can get lucky again," said McLaughlin of the
Distorted Humor filly, who will be making her stakes debut in the 1
1/16th mile Mother Goose. "I thought she ran really well last time out."
On
May 25, the Shadwell Stable color-bearer came from just off the pace to
score a 2 ¼ length victory in a six-furlong optional claimer in her
2011 debut at Belmont. In two starts at age 2, Alseera finished fifth
going five furlongs at Saratoga and was a front-running 1 ½ -length
winner next out at a mile on September 16 at Belmont Park.
In
the Mother Goose, Alseera could be facing Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner
Plum Pretty and the beaten favorite in that race, Joyful Victory, who
finished fourth.
"We've seen it happen before," said
McLaughlin with a smile. "If you go back to It's Tricky [in the Acorn],
we were looking for Grade 1 black type, and we'd have been happy with
second or third. It looks like we made the right decision with the other
one; maybe we can get a little lucky here."
