With the Kentucky Derby still 15 weeks away, the pari-mutuel field of all other 3-year-olds closed as the 7-2 favorite in pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Unbeaten Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Ted Noffey, from the barn of two-time Derby winner Todd Pletcher, was the 6-1 second choice and the shortest-priced individual interest.

Other horses who attracted mild interest from bettors included the Chad Brown-trained Remsen (G2) winner Paladin (14-1) and recent Gulfstream debut winner Chief Wallabee (17-1) trained by two-time Kentucky Derby winner Bill Mott.

Total handle for the Jan. 16-18 KDFW pool, the third of six scheduled wagering pools in advance of the 152nd running of the $5 million Kentucky Derby on May 2, was $355,060. That includes $272,202 in the win pool and $82,858 in exactas. The handle reflected an 8.2% gain from last year’s pool 3 handle of $328,150, which included $254,139 in the win pool and $74,011 in exacta wagers.

A total of $856,987 has been bet on Kentucky Derby future wagers thus far compared to $841,165 at this stage last year, a 1.9% increase.

Other Kentucky Derby Future Wager dates are set for Feb. 13-15 (pool 4), March 13-15 (pool 5) and April 2-4 (pool 6). The Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will be offered at the same time as pool 5.
