Alec's Moon wins Portland Meadows Oaks

The $82,700 Portland Meadows Oaks on Saturday was the richest race run at the track in nearly a quarter century and favorite Alec’s Moon gave a performance befitting her 3-to-5 odds in the one-mile race that is a qualifying race in the lucrative Black-Eyed Susan 2.2 bonus series for three-year-old fillies.

The Malibu Moon filly shipped up from Santa Anita Park and dominated her seven opponents in a visually impressive effort while earning her first stakes win and the 49th for Spendthrift Farm stallion Malibu Moon. Exploding into command on the far turn, she romped to a 6½-length victory while geared down under the track’s current leading ride, Joe Crispin.

After posting a last-place finish in the Santa Ynez Stakes (G2) on January 15 in her stakes debut when she was eased by jockey Garrett Gomez, Alec’s Moon took her game to a new level on Saturday with Crispin at the reins.

The bay filly is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, who owns her with Mark DeDominico and John Carver. The trio looks set for another exciting year with a sophomore filly after landing the 2010 Eclipse Award for champion three-year-old filly with Blind Luck, winner of three Grade 1 races last year, including the Kentucky Oaks (G1).
