What's left to say about Winx?
Another race. Another win. And no, she wasn't challenged.
A winner now of 27 straight races, the 7-year-old daughter of Street Cry extended her unbelievable run with a victory in Saturday's Group 1 Colgate Optic White, more commonly known as the George Main Stakes, at Australia's Randwick with a last-to-first (and yet effortless) score.
This was a world record 20th Group 1 win for Winx, who has at least two planned races left in her career. Of course, there was still that moment when the mare made you wonder: Will she get there?
Jockey Hugh Bowman asked, Winx answered, and it was another easy win in a race you could easily argue she needed off a bit of a layoff by Australian standards.
"This horse has brought so much joy not only to those of us connected to her, but far and wide throughout the whole of Australia and the world," Bowman said. "I know it's a little bit repetitive, but the reality is, the amount of people who approach me and just want to talk about her -- she gives to many people so much to look forward to."
"Hughie -- just a well-judged ride," added trainer Chris Waller. "He knew that he had that he had that extra 10 percent there to get her out of trouble, and that's why this winning sequence continues."
For Winx, rated the Longines World's Best Racehorse, next up should be the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, which she won by a record 6 1/2 lengths a year ago, on Oct. 6 at Flemington.
The ultimate goal this season is not the Breeders' Cup -- sorry, all of us Americans -- but rather another run at a the Group 1 Cox Plate, a race Winx has already won a record-tying three straight years. A fourth would exceed her mark, and also that of Kingston Town, who won the Moonee Valley feature from 1980-1982.
Winx went off at 1/9 on Saturday in the U.S. pool facing six rivals, none of which were lower than 22-1.
"We'll be lucky to see another one like her -- while I'm alive, anyway," Bowman added. "I think that's a given. And how lucky I am to be involved in such a horse?"
