Lingering hurricane waters throughout the stable area and damage to several barn roofs have forced Tampa Bay Downs officials to reschedule the opening of the backstretch to Monday, Nov. 4.

The track remains on schedule to begin its 2024-25 meet on Wednesday, Nov. 20, general manager Peter Berube said.

“Our track maintenance team, headed by (vice president of facilities and track surfaces) Tom McLaughlin, continues to work around the clock to make the needed repairs,” Berube said. “We understand the inconvenience this presents for some horsemen, but our no. 1 objective is to provide them and their horses with a safe and suitable environment in which to prepare for competition.”

Plans call for the track to open for training on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Like much of Florida’s west coast, Tampa Bay Downs was slammed by a one-two punch from major hurricanes Helene on Sept. 26 and Milton on Wednesday. The destruction has been widespread, with aftereffects expected to be felt for months or longer.

“As much as we’ve been looking forward to a new season, our thoughts are with our horsemen, employees and fans who have contributed so much to our success and been impacted by the hurricanes,” Berube said. “It is our fervent desire that the return of Thoroughbred action will help restore a sense of normalcy and offer an enjoyable outlet for all concerned, as it has over the years.”
