After floods, Gulfstream Park is expected to resume Saturday
Horsemen at Gulfstream Park are still recovering after heavy rains flooded South Florida on Wednesday night. The track canceled racing both Thursday and Friday in order to recover from the effects of over 20 inches of rain in the area.
The Gulfstream racing office confirmed to Horse Racing Nation that the track planned to resume racing Saturday. The 11-race card features an allowance-level sprint for 3-year-old horses as the tenth race. The morning-line favorite is Great Navigator, who finished second in the Sanford (G3) at Saratoga last year and makes his second start of his sophomore season.
According to a video Tweeted on Friday morning by Jose Luis Iglesias, the track and the ground along the stretch still appeared wet but was not underneath standing water. Tractors were able to drive along the racing surface and work the track.
As a result of the rains, barns at Gulfstream were flooded Wednesday night; into Thursday evening there was still flooding on the backstretch. José L. Verenzuela posted a Tweet late Wednesday night, showing one of the affected barns. A member of the barn staff stood, water past his ankles, with supply shelves and a fan partially submerged in flood water. Alberto Ettedgui R. posted a Tweet Thursday evening showing a flooded barn at Gulfstream, with horses still in their stalls.
There is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in Hallandale Beach between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. EDT on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast for Saturday is clear, though Sunday's forecast includes a 40 percent chance of rain.
