Cave Run may have set a new standard for career claimers.

The 5-year-old Street Sense gelding out of a Bernardini mare was the object of what might have been a record Saturday at Oaklawn Park. After he finished fourth as the 3-2 favorite in the seventh race, it was announced there were 36 claims for him.

Trainer Kenny Smith won the shake on behalf of new owner Charles Jennings, who paid $20,000 to make the claim.

Longtime regulars in the press box at Oaklawn could not remember the last time there were that many claims for one horse, suggesting it might have been unprecedented.

It was the 11th time in his last 17 starts that Cave Run was claimed. Bred by Godolphin, he has a career record of 25: 8-5-2 with $209,785 in earnings.
