Horse Racing Nation’s Super Screener handicapping system has turned its attention from the Kentucky Derby to Saturday’s 2018 Preakness Stakes and, as such, the approach changes when it comes to making money on the Triple Crown’s second leg.

Super Screener author Mike Shutty lists 15 total criteria to help identify win and in-the-money contenders based on data going back to Timber Country’s victory in the 1995 running. Shutty uses Brisnet Pace and Speed Ratings because they provide a consistent framework for figuring out reliable benchmarks.

So, here are five must-know criteria Shutty uses to “screen” out which horses are worth including on your tickets:

1. Horses who ran and ran well in the Derby excel in the Preakness. Give extra credit to those who started and ran in the top half of the Derby field. Also give extra credit to those who had a rough trip.

2. All “new shooters” — horses that didn’t run in the Derby — must have raced within four weeks of the Preakness. Also, one should discount the win chances of a horse that has encountered no significant trouble in his last two races and had a 12-plus point swing in Brisnet speed figures.

3. For win contenders, horses must have earned a 106-plus in any of their pace/speed ratings in one of their final two preps.

4. Move up any horse that produced back-to-back top late pace figures as a must-use bottom of the Triefecta and Superfecta contender.

5. Discount horses aided by a Derby track bias.

As we said, there’s 10 more elements crucial to Shutty’s formula. And if you’re not familiar with terms like E2 or LP, that’s all included in Brisnet’s free Preakness Stakes past performances. But consider that the Super Screener will do the heavy lifting for you.

The 2018 Preakness Super Screener also includes:

• Horse-by-horse analysis.

• Who to use and who to toss.

• Live longshots you can't leave off tickets.

• Wagering strategy with Exacta, Trifecta and Superfecta tickets.
