Horse Racing Nation’s Super Screener handicapping system has turned its attention to the 2018 Belmont Stakes and, as such, the approach changes when it comes to making money on the Triple Crown’s final leg.

Super Screener author Mike Shutty lists 22 total criteria to help identify win and in-the-money contenders based on data going back to Thunder Gulch's victory in the 1995 running. Shutty uses Brisnet Pace and Speed Ratings because they provide a consistent framework for figuring out reliable benchmarks.

Among his top Belmont scores were selecting 2017 winner Tapwrit as the Super Screener's lone "A" (must-use) horse. Plus he touted 2016 runner-up Destin at 10-1 alone with previous winners Tonalist (9-1) and Palace Malice (13-1).

So, here are five must-know criteria Shutty uses to “screen” out which horses are worth including on your tickets:

1. A horse must have run his prior race in May to be considered a win contender or on-the-board finisher.

2. When Using Brisnet's average winning distance figures, the horse’s sire AWD plus half of the dam’s AWD should add to 10.3 or more.

3. Favor horses with 3-5 races off a 45-plus day layoff heading into the Belmont. Six-plus races off the layoff is a major knock, and a top last out is even worse.

4. Demand a Brisnet 101-plus figure in either the E2 or LP, or a Brisnet Speed Rating in one or both of the races run prior to the Belmont Stakes.

5. Look for a move forward in the Brisnet Speed Rating between the two races run prior to the Belmont (if a drop between races, it can be no more than five points unless tough trip).

And we'll add a bonus: Give extra credit to any horse with a good race at Gulfstream Park. That's worth noting, as Hofburg enters with two of them.

That leaves 16 more elements crucial to Shutty’s formula. And if you’re not familiar with terms like E2 or LP, that’s all included in Brisnet’s free Belmont Stakes past performances. But consider that the Super Screener will do the heavy lifting for you, plus provide full-field analysis for other Grade 1 races on the June 9 card at Belmont Park.
