Assiniboia Downs, Century Mile and Hastings Racecourse will launch a Western Canadian Triple Crown this year.

The Western Canadian Triple Crown will consist of the Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia Downs on Aug. 7, the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Century Mile in Alberta on Aug. 26 and the British Columbia Derby (G3) at Hastings on Sept. 16, according to a news release from the three tracks.

In addition to about US$334,000 in purse money, there will be an additional bonus of about US$75,000 if a horse wins all three of the events.

“To link a meaningful financial bonus to the already robust purse offerings should only elevate the participation and competitiveness of the races,” Darren Dunn, CEO of Assiniboia Downs, said in the release. “It also results in a rewarding outcome for both the racing fans and related horse connections.”

Nichelle Milner, British Columbia's director of racing, said in the release that she is pleased Manitoba and Alberta asked Hastings Racecourse to be involved in the concept.

“A Western Canadian Triple Crown has such great potential. I can see eventually awarding points for first, second and third place finishes and have the top three connections profit from it. We’re thrilled to be part of it.”
