3 short-priced Breeders' Cup contenders to toss from your bets
As the Breeders' Cup return to Churchill Downs this Friday and Saturday, Mike Shutty, author of Horse Racing Nation's Super Screener handicapping system, has isolated three horses that figure to take money -- and recommended you don't join in betting them.
The Super Screener each week analyzes top stakes races using a systemic, data-driven approach to handicapping. Subscribers receive a PDF guide with full race analysis, notes on each contender and suggested wagers. Like what you see here? Get the Super Screener advantage today!
Last year, Shutty highlighted the following vulnerable favorites:
| Race | Horse | Odds | Finish |
| Juvenile Fillies Turf | Happily | 5-2 | 14th |
| Mile | Ribchester | 7-2 | 5th |
| Turf | Highland Reel | 8-5 | 3rd |
| Juvenile | U S Navy Flag | 7-1 | 10th |
As for this year, fade the following...
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint: Shang Shang Shang
"This Wesley Ward-trained filly narrowly defeated Europe’s 'B' players at Royal Ascot," Shutty says. "She has been away since June and would prefer to go shorter. Faces several other pace types. While vulnerable for the win spot, Shang Shang Shang could hold on to the bottom of the Superfecta. Offers no value."
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: Just Wonderful
"Trainer Aidan O’Brien charges fail in this race often at low odds," Shutty says. "This one fits the historical profile of one of those bet-against favorite. Other Euros are better -- toss.
Breeders' Cup Classic: McKinzie
"He dueled throughout the Grade 1 Pennsylvania and posted a huge lifetime top six months off a layoff," Shutty says. "Too much too soon, and he now runs 1 1/4 miles for the first time as part of what will be a hot pace. McKinzie is vulnerable here at a low price."
