$385K Churchill Downs Pick 6 carryover to pay out Thursday
With no players correctly solving the Pick 6 on Kentucky Derby day, the carryover transitions to a 20-cent Pick 6 on Thursday that has a carryover pool of $385,131 with a mandatory payout. In addition, another $385,131 will feed a 20-cent Single Six Pick 6 jackpot that starts on Friday's card. Similar Carryover generated $1.4 million in wagering in 2016 In 2016, there was a Thursday Pick 6 carryover of $343,154 after the pick six sequence ending in Nyquist's victory went unsolved. That 2016 carryover generated wagering of $1,470,005 into the 20-cent Pick 6 pool. In 2016, the Pick 6 sequence was fairly formful with some smaller fields run over a sloppy track:
Race 3 - 4.40-1 3rd choice in wagering (12 horses)
Race 4 - 3.10-1 2nd choice (7 horses)
Race 5 - 1.30-1 favorite (7 horses)
Race 6 - 3.30-1 third choice (9 horses)
Race 7 - 1.60-1 favorite (7 horses)
Race 8 - 3.50-1 2nd choice (11 horses) Mostly logical outcomes led to a 20-cent Pick 6 payoff of $679.40. While that may not sound like much, keep in mind that on a $1 basis that equates to $3,397.
Big fields, tough sequence in carryover
Thursday’s weather forecast is for 84degrees and sunny, so without any rain and scratches, this could be a very tough sequence indeed.
Race 3 (9 horses)
The evenly matched nine-horse $25,000 claimer going 7 furlongs has a 7-2 favorite and unbelievably six horses at 5-1 morning line or lower. Three horses have a 5-1 morning and two have a 9-2 morning line.
Race 4 (9 horses)
A five-furlong turf sprint allowance with several contenders.
Race 5 (10 horses)
A maiden filly dirt sprint with four first-timers, but 3-1 morning line favorite East Moon and 7-2 morning line Glitznglamour both ran second in Keeneland maiden races and figure to be competitive in here.
Race 6 (10 horses)
In this claiming sprint at 6 ½ furlongs, #5 Frank the Butcher is the 2-1 favorite after a daylight maiden claiming win at Gulfstream Park. But others warrant a look, including #10 Farmer Phil, who debuted a winner in a sloppy maiden claimer at Oaklawn Park.
Race 7 (11 horses)
This one-mile dirt allowance is loaded with speed, and a fast pace could develop. Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert ships in Santa Anita allowance winner #3 Life’s Blessings, who was installed as the 3-1 favorite. Several others could factor including #7, Awestruck at 7-2, #9 Lilt at 5-1, #10 Ma’am at 5-1 and #11 Breaking Bread at 8-1.
Race 8 (12 horses)
This one-mile maiden turf event could be the toughest race in the pick six. Several contenders merit consideration and this is a leg where going five deep or more may not even be enough.
