2-year-old Damon's Mound dazzles on debut for Lovell
Damon's Mound dominated his debut at Churchill Downs, drawing off to a 12 1/2-length victory in a maiden special weight for 2-year-old.
Damon's Mound broke a step slow, but soon gained position and tracked the leading trio while sitting three-deep in the second flight. The Michelle Lovell trainee engaged outside the leading line around the far turn without being asked by jockey Gabriel Saez, took command approaching the quarter pole and drew off at will down the stretch. He crossed the wire in a time of 1:09.84 for the six furlongs on fast dirt, and paid $10.80 to win.
Damon's Mound is by Girvin out of the Stroll mare San Antonio Stroll. He is the fourth winner from Girvin's first crop, which also includes Astoria Stakes winner Devious Dame.
Damon's Mound is owned by Michele and Cliff Love. Cliff Love also bred the colt. The Loves also campaigned his dam, the Texas-bred San Antonio Stroll. She was a three-time winner who also showed precocity. San Antonio Stroll won her debut as a 2-year-old, and next time out finished second in the 2016 La Senorita Stakes at Retama Park. Damon's Mound is her first registered foal.
