2-time champion Goodnight Olive is retired at age 6
Two-time champion female sprinter Goodnight Olive is being retired at age 6 by her new owner, Resolute Farm.
The Midway, Ky., farm said in a news release that the intention was for her to continue racing when she was bought in November for $6 million after winning the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint for trainer Chad Brown.
"At the end of the day, these athletes are used to performing at the highest level and unless Chad and his team thought she could continue to compete at that level we always knew this was a likely path for her," Resolute Farm general manager Gavin O'Connor said in the release. "She really doesn't have anything else to prove. We are so thankful for the opportunity to play a part in such a wonderful horse's career."
Goodnight Olive had a career record of 12: 9-2-1 and earnings of $2,196,000. She also won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in 2022, with other graded wins in the 2022 Ballerina (G1) and the 2023 Madison (G1) and Bed o'Roses (G2).
"Olive is settling on our farm in Midway with some good company,"Noel Murphy, farm manager at Resolute, said in the release. "Esteemed Breeders' Cup champions Caravel and Pizza Bianca are in adjoining paddocks. Every day when I go to the barn, I am amazed by the presence of the incredible mares on our farm such as Puca, Queen Caroline and Goddess Pele and many other high-quality mares joining these three Breeders Cup champions."
Resolute breeding director Chelsey Stone said in the release that Goodnight Olive will be bred to Taylor Made's Not This Time this year.
Steve Laymon of First Row Partners, the previous owner of Olive, said in the release, "We are pleased with the team at Resolute Farm acquiring Olive and their dedication to keeping high-quality racehorses like Olive within the United States, as there is a tendency for them to be acquired by foreign buyers. Not This Time has emerged as a prominent stallion in North America and with top-quality mares like Olive I expect an exceptional racing prospect."
Resolute Farm acquired the former Shadwell Stud property in Midway last year and resumed horse operations on the farm as of January 2024.
Goodnight Olive's name is a nod to the salutation used by workers and performers at the renowned New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City, paying homage to the legendary Broadway Flapper ghost, Olive Thomas, according to the release.
