2 jockeys are taken to hospital after Monmouth spill
Jockeys Heriberto Figueroa and Tomás Mejía were taken to a hospital with apparent head injuries after they were involved in a spill in the fifth race Sunday at Monmouth Park.
Both their horses ran loose after the accident and were quickly corralled. Figueroa's mount, Rose for a Saint, walked back to his barn. Mejía's horse, Service With Honor, walked on his own into an equine ambulance, according to TVG's Caton Bredar.
Figueroa was examined for a possible concussion, and Mejía suffered a head trauma, according to Monmouth Park medical director Dr. Angelo Chinnici. Agents for both riders and a track spokesman said they were taken to Monmouth Medical Center in nearby Long Branch, N.J., for further examination.
Service With Honor was making a stalking move between horses on the second turn of the 1 1/16-mile turf race when he appeared to clip heels with a tiring horse ahead of him. According to the Equibase race chart he lost a shoe and stumbled. Then the trailing Rose for a Saint could not avoid the accident, and he went down.
