2020 Kentucky Derby runner Enforceable wins Group 1 in Perú
Enforceable, winner of the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes in 2020 and seventh in the Kentucky Derby that year, broke through at the top level on Sunday, winning the Group 1 Clásico Jockey Club del Perú at Monterrico.
The son of Tapit raced in the United States from ages 2 through 5. He was sold at the Fasig-Tipton July sale of horses of racing age, with plans to stand him at stud. However, soon after beginning his stallion career at Haras Rancho Fátima, he was found to be infertile and sold to owner Stud Jet Set according to a report from Joe Nevills of Paulick Report.
Enforceable returned to racing in the fall of 2023. It took him four races in his new country to make it back to the winners' circle, but got there Feb. 5, 2024 in a handicap at Monterrico. He would break through at the group level in his new country July 29 of that year, when he won the Clásico Independencia (G2).
He returned to the races on April 6, winning the Clásico Aniversario De La Fundación Del Jockey Club Del Perú at Monterrico. He was third behind Gluck in the Clásico La Copa (G2) on May 11, his final prep for the Clásico Jockey Club del Perú. Off that win Gluck was sent off the favorite in Sunday's race.
Instead of setting the pace as he did last out, however, Enforceable was a little less keen. Under jockey Victor Salazar he tracked the pace set by the favorite.
Into the stretch Enforceable continued to hound Gluck, and was carried out near the center of the track as Gluck bore out. Despite that, Enforceable continued to battle. Don't Lose Time and Serafín rallied inside, but in the final sixteenth it was Enforceable moving best of all. He edged away to win, completing the distance of about 1 1/2 miles in 2:36.08 Don't Lose Time, Serafín and Gluck followed behind in that order, in a photo for second.
