In this most unique of seasons, the Belmont Stakes -- traditionally the last and longest of the three Triple Crown races for 3-year-olds -- will for the first time ever serve as the launch of the classic season with a reduced distance.

A field of 10 was entered in the Belmont, which this year has been shortened to 1 1/8-miles from its usual mile-and-a-half “Test of a Champion.” The post-position draw for the Belmont is set to start at noon Eastern and can be streamed live via the New York Racing Association Youtube page.

The changes to the traditional Triple Crown format this season are a result of racing’s shutdown earlier this spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Kentucky Derby, which traditionally starts the Triple Crown on the first Saturday in May, instead was rescheduled for Labor Day weekend on Sept. 5. The Preakness Stakes, the traditional second jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, will this year serve as the final leg on Oct. 3.

While the 2020 Triple Crown may be unlike any before, there will still be a million dollars on the line and a colt’s chance to etch its name in Belmont history when the gates spring open Saturday at about 5:42 p.m. ET.

Looming large in this year’s Belmont is Sackatoga Stable’s New York-bred Tiz the Law, who figures to be a prohibitive favorite in the wagering. Sporting the same connections as 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide, Tiz the Law tallied wins in both the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) and Florida Derby (G2) in his only two starts this season.

In addition to the Belmont, five other graded stakes are set for Saturday at Belmont Park. They include the $300,000 Acorn (G1) for 3-year-old fillies going a mile on the main track; $250,000 Woody Stephens (G1) for 3-year-olds going seven furlongs; $150,000 Penine Ridge (G2) at a mile on turf for 3-year-olds; and the $150,000 Wonder Again (G3) for 3-year-old fillies going a mile on the grass.
