2019 Kentucky Derby odds: Plenty of value in War of Will
Like what you saw from War of Will in Saturday's Lecomte Stakes (G3) win? Consider booking a flight to Las Vegas.
Updated odds as of late Sunday at William Hill U.S. show the Mark Casse-trained son of War Front as a 75-1 shot, down from his 100-1 opening price now inside of four months until Kentucky Derby 2019.
Gary Barber-owned War of Will took an outside trip in the Lecomte, needing just one crack of the stick from jockey Tyler Gaffalione to straighten up in the lane and prevail by four lengths at Fair Grounds. Assigned a 94 Beyer Speed Figure, the colt is expected to remain in New Orleans for next month's Risen Star Stakes (G2).
“His pedigree is telling you turf but your head is telling you dirt,” said David Carroll, Casse's Fair Grounds-based assistant. “Anyone that’s been around him in all of the different divisions from (assistant trainer) Jamie Begg in New York, to the guys at the farm last fall have watched him breeze on the dirt.
"They see him and just say, ‘Wow’. He’s just so impressive on the dirt and his breezes are just unbelievable.”
The William Hill U.S. odds represent the leading future prices outside of DraftKings' recently suspended Kentucky Derby wagering on Johnny Avello's board in Mississippi.
William Hill's top hosts on the board remain a trio of Bob Baffert trainees: Game Winner (5-1), Improbable (7-1) and Coliseum (8-1). Then goes a long list of horses -- War of Will isn't among the Top 30 choices -- before you find the Lecomte winner.
So, yes, there's value. How long might it last? Coliseum's lingering low price proves that significant action on a horse should keep its odds short.
In other notable changes coming out of the Lecomte, Hog Creek Hustle, the runner-up, dropped to 125-1, while Plus Que Parfait, the beaten morning line favorite, is up to 125-1 after dropping to as low as 80-1.
