2019 Kentucky Derby Top 50: Baffert trio leads the rankings
Time away from the races has done nothing to discount the 2019 Kentucky Derby chances, at least in Horse Racing Nation readers' minds, of Bob Baffert's unbeaten Grade 1-winning duo.
Game Winner and Improbable sat 1-2 all winter in HRN's Kentucky Derby Top 50 rankings and figure to remain there, at least until after their looming matchup in the March 9 San Felipe Stakes (G2).
Baffert trainees actually hold the first three spots in the user-generated list, with recent Robert B. Lewis (G3) winner Mucho Gusto next in the rankings assembled based on ratings assigned to individual horses by HRN readers. To join in the process, simply register for a Horse Racing Nation account, visit a horse's profile page, and assign a value. Horses can be re-rated weekly.
A number of new names are climbing the rankings with Hidden Scroll, whose 104 Beyer Speed Figure on debut leads the 3-year-old crop, in at No. 6. He'll test his talents in next Saturday's Fountain of Youth (G2).
Winners from the last week show some movement in the right direction with Risen Star (G2) hero War of Will in at No. 7 and HRN readers taking kindly to No. 8 Anothertwistafate, who prevailed in the El Camino Real Derby on synthetic.
In addition to Hidden Scroll, Dream Maker (10th), Intrepid Heart (11th), Maximum Security (14th) and Global Campaign (15th) are each in the Top 20 without a stakes win. In all but Dream Maker's case, none of those promising sophomores have so much has started in a stakes race.
Of course, the list is likely in for some major changes the next two weeks as, following the Fountain of Youth, four points-paying preps run on that aforementioned March 9 weekend.
