2018 Kentucky Derby odds: Bob Baffert's McKinzie emerges
In Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Solomini, trainer Bob Baffert may not have played his best card yet when it comes to top 2-year-old runners.
New 2018 Kentucky Derby odds released this week by Wynn Las Vegas reflected that, as Baffert-trained McKinzie -- an easy 5 1/2-length winner in his debut -- was listed for the first time at 35-1. That price could drop further should the Street Sense colt perform to expectations in next month’s Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity.
McKinzie is named for Brad McKinzie, the late friend of Baffert and the horse’s owners, Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman. They chose a good one.
McKinzie is the Wynn’s fifth choice even before his stakes debut, with top choices Bolt d’Oro (15-1), Juvenile winner Good Magic (18-1) and another impressive debut winner, Todd Pletcher trained Montauk (22-1), the current favorites. Baffert’s Solomini, second in the Juvenile, also sits 30-1.
