A filly who was making her career debut was euthanized after she was hurt at the start of Sunday's final race at Aqueduct.

Genetic Gem, a Canada-bred 3-year-old by Declaration of War, appeared to throw her jockey Eric Cancel forward to the turf in her first steps out of the gate in the $43,000 maiden-claiming race.

Cancel walked off under his own power, according to a Twitter post by New York Racing Association spokesman Keith McCalmont.

"Yes, he's fine," Cancel's agent PJ Campo said in a text message to Horse Racing Nation. "I just talked to him."

Dr. Anthony Verderosa, the NYRA veterinary director, told McCalmont that Genetic Gem might have broken her pelvis, and that was why his team made the decision to euthanize her.

Bred in Ontario by Breeders' Cup board chairman Fred Hertrich, Genetic Gem was the 9-2 third choice in the field of 10 fillies and mares. She was trained and partly owned by Carlos Martin, whose family's Britton Peak operation was partnered with Paul Morongello and Brian Murphy.
