I was informed of the atrocity at the farm owned by Charles Ray Ford, a 46-year-old thoroughbred owner and breeder in the Ark-La-Tex area, by a friend who was alerted by the good people at Remember Me Rescue.
The disgusting and heartbreaking facts of the story, via KSLA-TV in Shreveport, and Remember Me Rescue are this: Ford was charged last week with multiple counts of animal cruelty for neglect, abuse and starvation of over 60 horses on his farm in Many, Louisiana. Of the 60, at least 25 have been found dead on the property, many of them already buried.
Sabine Parish District Attorney Don Burkett has been to the site where there were reportedly 53 mares and 20 yearlings on the farm in 2010. Less than half of the mares have been found at this time, and only six of the yearlings.
According to the Sabine Humane Society's abuse investigator, his agency has tried working with the owner to get the horses' food since November, but continued financial troubles finally led to a judge ordering removal of all the horses from the property. It was finally at the time of the seizure, when the reality of how horrific the conditions for all the horses at Ford’s farm had become.
As for Ford, the district attorney plans to prosecute him on separate counts of animal cruelty for each and every horse. Hopefully this despicable act will be dealt with accordingly.
More importantly though are the surviving horses.
Along with Remember Me Rescue, the Louisiana Horse Rescue Association, the Sabine Humane Society, Shannon Rojas, the LSU veterinary team, and many volunteers have joined forces to do everything possible to save as many of the living, but ailing horses as they can. Many of the surviving horses are currently clinging to life.
