Zipse’s Kentucky Derby Daily - Day 79
Regally bred out of a Summer Squall mare, the apparent star in the making has now been away from the races for three months, and I am not sure why. Once considered a prospect for the BC Juvenile Turf, Cho decided to keep him at home for a facile score in the Prevue Stakes. That made sense, but since then I expected to see his name on the entry list for the CashCall Futurity, or the Sham Stakes, or the Robert Lewis Stakes. No on all three. There was a block of training missed after his Prevue win, with little news coming in on his status. Cho talked about putting Premier Pegasus on the grass, which seemed odd for such a well regarded Derby prospect. He was becoming the mystery horse.
[Is Premier Pegasus overrated on HRN's current list of 2011 Kentucky Derby Contenders at number 5?]
I am not sure if all the questions will ever be answered, but one thing I am sure of is this colt has a ton of ability, a high cruising speed, and the breeding to excel both on dirt and around two-turns. I have long considered him the West Coast’s top Derby prospect. I guess I just needed to be patient for his return.
A little weary from waiting for Premier Pegasus to run again, I needed to see for myself Sunday’s entries, to be certain that Pre Peg would indeed be on the list for the San Vicente. Happily, he is.
In other Derby doings, Horse Racing Nation has compiled a list of top 2011 Kentucky Derby Contenders and their current odds at Wynn and Lucky's. Listed below are the top prospects that are not part of the 23 single betting interests on the first Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Meaning a bet placed on the mutual field in the next three days, is a bet on all of these prospects and more. Notice Pre Peg is part of the field.
