Talking Rachel Alexandra and an update on Maclean’s Music

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Amy Kearns, the Digital Media Manager for Stonestreet Farms this afternoon at Arlington Park. In town to make the announcement of the gender of Rachel Alexandra’s second foal, which will be made on the Arlington television feed immediately after the running of Belmont’s Mother Goose, Amy and I had the chance to discuss some of her favorite horses at the Lexington, Kentucky farm. Yes, of course we discussed we talked about our personal favorite, Rachel, but we also talked about Hot Dixie Chick, and that long-lost super colt, Maclean’s Music.
You remember Maclean’s Music, the colt who set the racing world abuzz when he broke his maiden by 7 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita while running six furlongs in 1:07.44 with little encouragement from rider Mike Smith. Sure you do, if word about the race did not somehow get your attention, surely the news that that he had earned a 114 Beyer, the highest score ever recorded for a first time starter, did the trick. Problem is, the unbelievable debut performance came in March of 2011, and Maclean’s Music has not made it back to the track since. Amy was able to share some good news on him though, telling me that the talented colt by Distorted Humor, out of the Unbridled's Song mare Forest Music is doing very well since splint bone surgery this spring. He is currently galloping down in Ocala, and as you can imagine they are taking it slow with the Stonestreet homebred, but a return to the races sometime this fall is the hope.
As far as Rachel, Amy tells me 2009 Horse of the Year, and soon to be Hall of Famer is doing well. She’s excited to tell the world the sex of the baby that Rachel is currently carrying by Bernardini, but would not divulge that privileged information to me even a few hours early. Rachel’s first foal, known as Taco at the farm, is growing every day, and looking more and more like his mom all the time, according to Amy. Sorry Curlin fans, it appears he is taking more after mom than dad. I know many of you are wondering what the name of the foal will be, but you will need to wait a little bit longer, as the decision will be made later this summer. Plans for Taco to be weaned from his champion mother are in place and will happen in the next week or so, depending on the weather in Lexington. Also set to be weaned from his graded stakes winning mom, Hot Dixie Chick, is Union Jackson.
Also son of the two-time Horse of the Year, Curlin, Union Jackson, or Chili as he is known on the farm, is one youngster that has really caught the attention of the Stonestreet family. Out of the extremely talented Dixie Union mare, Hot Dixie Chick, Union Jackson may be showing the early promise that can foreshadow a real runner in the making. Oh and by the way, Union Jackson is the proud owner of a striking interrupted blaze. Hot Dixie Chick, who has become best of friends with Rachel, is now in foal to Street Cry.
It was great to catch up with everything Stonestreet today with Amy, and specifically the latest on some of our favorites, but it also reminds me how eager I am to get back to visit my friends at Stonestreet Farms. Thank you to Amy and the farm for the beautiful photos below...
