Pedigree Spotlight written by Scott Dick
Santiva has
shown nothing but class in his five career starts.  He's yet to finish off the board and has not
run a bad race.  The Giant's Causeway
colt has raced on wet and fast tracks, as well as turf and synthetic surfaces.  He's handled all challenges like a
professional.  Though he's only won a
single race, it was an impressive victory in the grade II Kentucky Jockey Club
Stakes, where he defeated Derby hopeful Astrology.

Santiva is
coming off a workman like 2nd place finish in the Risen Star Stakes at the Fair
Grounds.  The Eddie Kenneally trainee was
very wide into the 1st turn, and extremely wide around the 2nd turn, putting
his nose in front in the stretch, Santiva loomed large. But the lay off and the
loss of ground was too much to over come, fading just a bit deep in the
stretch, the fresher Mucho Macho Man defeated him by 1 and ½ lengths.
He's sired such
grade I winners as Aragorn, Carriage Trail, Eskendereya, First Samurai, Giant
Oak, Heatseeke, My Typhoon, Red Giant and Swift Temper, not to mention grade II
winners Cowboy Cal and Hold Me Back.  The
dam of Giant's Causeway is Mariah's Storm. Mariah's Storm was an incredible
race mare and in fact, the movie “Dreamer” is loosely based on her story. She
fractured her cannon bone in the 1993 Alcibiadies Stakes and came back at the
age of four to win several graded stakes.
Mariah's Storm has been just as special as a broodmare.  She's produced extremely useful sire's in
Roar of the Tiger and the New York based stallion Freud.
The dam of
Santiva is Slide.  Slide has produced 8 winners,
including the colt Take Arms who won over a $100,000 in his career.  Slide is a half sister to Champion Sprinter
Safely Kept, she is also a half to Partner's Hero.  Slide's sire is Smarten. Smarten was
sensational in his three year old season.
He went on a string of graded stakes wins, scoring victories in the
grade III Illinois Derby, the Pennsylvania Derby, the grade III Ohio Derby, the
grade II American Derby, the grade III Woodlawn Stakes and the grade III
Marylander Handicap.  He also set a in
winning the Ohio Derby.  He has proved
useful as broodmare sire.
The dam of
slide is Safely Home.  Safely Home was a consistent
runner, trying her heart out in all of her races.  She found the winners circle 16 times in 72
starts. Safely Home has been an even better broodmare.  She's the dam of the aforementioned Champion
Sprinter Safely Kept.  She finished her
career with earnings exceeding $2,000,000.
Safely Home is also the dam of Partner's Hero.  Partner's Hero won 5 stakes and $554,000 in
purse money.  He has also been a useful
sire, he's sired grade II turf sprinter and millionaire Hero's Reward, as well
as New York Hero, winner of the grade II Lane's End Stakes.
Santiva has
yet to run a bad race, and has shown a will to overcome adversity with signs of
having real superstar talent.  He's
coming off a very good 2nd place finish and should definitely move forward with
his 2nd start of the year.  I am personally
very high on this colt, he has a winners pedigree and seems to have the mind
and heart of a champion.  I will
definitely be using this horse in the exotics, if he does find himself in the
starting gate on the first Saturday in May!
The New
Jersey based Sweet Ducky has been very consistent, with 3 wins in 6 starts.  He's coming off a credible 2nd place finish
in the Holy Bull Stakes to winner Dialed In.
Sweet Ducky has won two minor stakes at Monmouth Park, but he's yet to
score in graded stakes company. He ran a disappointing 4th place finish in the
Delta Jackpot Million stakes beaten 9 3/4th's lengths to Gourmet Dinner.

The dam of
Pulpit is Preach. Preach was a precocious filly, winning the grade I Frizette
stakes at the distance of 1 mile in only her 3rd career start.  She won 4 races in 15 starts and purse money
exceeding $300,000. She's been a useful broodmare, producing 7 winners.
The dam of
Sweet Ducky is Storm's Darling.  Storm's
Darling was a versatile mare, winning races at distances ranging from 5
furlongs to 8.5 furlongs. Storm's Darling has only produced two horses to date,
Sweet Ducky and the filly Pegasus Storm. Pegasus Storm only managed one 2nd
place finish and one 3rd place finish in her 7 race career.  She is now a broodmare and in foal.  The dam of Storm's Darling is
Sinceilostmybaby.  Sinceilostmybaby found
the winners circle 11 times in 42 career starts.  She was a speedy filly who won the 7 furlong Devil
Tower Stakes.  The sire of Storm's
Darling is Storm Boot.  Although Storm
Boot only won 4 races in his career, he became a very strong sire.  He's the sire of stakes winner and Breeder's
Cup Turf Sprint 3rd place finisher, Storm Treasure.  He's also sired the grade III winner and
grade I stakes placed Bourbon Belle.  Bourbon
Belle is the dam of Not Bourbon, winner of the Queen's Plate and earner of over
a $1,000,000 in his race career.  Storm
Boot sired 46 stakes winners and his progeny has earned over $26,000,000.
Sweet Ducky
has been a consistent colt, but he's yet to win in graded stakes company.  His only start further then 1 mile was a poor
4th place finish at Delta Downs, which is a bullring and I think Sweet Ducky
prefers a bigger race track.  I have a
feeling we haven't seen the best from this colt.  He has good bloodlines with both distance and speed
in his pedigree.  He might be able to
surprise people in the triple crown ranks.
This hard
trying colt has left his connections hungry, “Derby hungry.”  Gourmet Dinner has yet to run a bad race, he's
tried and tested with 4 wins in 8 starts.
His biggest score was in the grade III Delta Jackpot Million, at odds of
20-1 Gourmet Dinner served a delicious victory for his backers.  In that race, Gourmet Dinner defeated fellow
Derby hopefuls Sweet Ducky and Clubhouse Ride. The delicious one started his 3
year old season with two credible finishes in graded stakes company, a better
then it looked 3rd place finish to Dialed In in the Holy Bull Stakes.  He then took his shot at Soldat in the
Fountain of Youth.  Soldat was on an
unpressured easy lead before Gourmet Dinner made his run at him, showing a nice
kick, Gourmet Dinner closed the gap to finish 2nd, beaten only 2
lengths.
The dam of
Gourmet Dinner is Potluck Dinner.  Potluck
dinner only raced once, but as a broodmare she has produced several winners.  She's the dam of On The Rail.  On The Rail won 9 races in 38 starts and
captured over $219,000 in purse money. Most of Potluck Dinner's progeny have
been sprinters.  The sire of Potluck
Dinner is Pentelicus.  The speedy
Pentelicus won 11 races in 37 starts, he is a stakes winner and set the track
record for 6 ½ furlongs at Arlington Park.
Pentelicus was royally bred, he is a half brother to the mare Gana
Facil. Gana Facil is the dam of Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled, she is also
the dam of Wood Memorial winner Cahill Road.
The dam of Potluck Dinner is Romantic Dinner. Romantic Dinner won only a single race in her 30 race career. She as produced 7 winners, including Sea Of Green who won the Dancing Count and the Rumson Stakes and finished 2nd in the grade III Jersey Shore Breeder's Cup Stakes.Romantic Dinner is the dam of Candlelightdinner. Candlelightdinner has produced the filly Musical Romance who has won over $177,000 to date. Candlelightdinner is also the dam of the gelding Vuelve Ruben M who has won 4 times in 7 starts with purse money exceeding $103,000.

Gourmet
Dinner is a fighter and has proven his quality.
He's kind of a head scratcher, his bloodlines all point to sprinting,
but yet he's been able to stretch out.  I
like this colt quite a bit, he reminds me a little bit of Musket Man.  I'm not sure this colt can win the Derby, but
have high hopes he will make a good showing for himself and who knows with the
right trip, anything can happen!
