Despite a little bobble at the break, the good looking bay filly assumed the lead quickly from her rail post position under rider Rosie Napravnik. Kauai Katie set down quick fractions of :22.29 and :45.67, and from there the 9-5 favorite began to leave the rest of the seven-horse field behind. Lengthening her leading margin with every single stride down the stretch, she coasted to the wire the easiest kind of winner. 5-2 third choice, Kansas won the battle for second, but she was full 12 lengths behind the sparkling victress.
In comparison with the day’s other two-year-old filly races, Kauai Katie won 1.36 seconds faster than the other Md Sp Wt race on the card, and while the Grade 3 Schuylerville was run at a sixteenth farther, Katie would only have needed to dawdle through the extra half furlong in seven and four-fifths to finish in faster time that the co-feature winner, So Many Ways.
Purchased for $490,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale as a two-year-old in training earlier this year, Kauai Katie is a daughter of the popular A.P. Indy sire, Malibu Moon, while her dam is a stakes winning daughter of More Than Ready, named More Than Pretty. The young broodmare has also produced a full brother to Kauai Katie, named Winding Way, who broke his maiden impressively last month at Hollywood Park.
A representative from Stonestreet used the words brilliant, super excited, and proud when talking about Kauai Katie with me after today’s race. Judging by what I saw today, I can certainly understand her enthusiasm.
