As first reported by Claire Novak of the BloodHorse, the reigning two-time Horse of the Year, Wise Dan was taken this morning to the Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Kentucky to undergo emergency colic surgery, according to his trainer, Charlie LoPresti.

A Morton Fink homebred, the seven year-old gelding has won 21 of his 29 lifetime starts, including back-to-back victories in the 2012 and 2013 Breeders' Cup Mile. Most recently, he scored a courageous, second consecutive victory in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic in the race proceeding the Kentucky Derby.

More details on this breaking story will be added as soon as they come in.

***Update from Claire Novak on Twitter ... "He is still in surgery, but LoPresti called to say it's the best case scenario for colic, nothing had to be resected. "If he recovers from it well, they're thinking 6 or 8 weeks off at the most," said LoPresti, added this shouldn't be career ending."

***Update from Claire Novak on Twitter ... "Wise Dan is in a recovery stall, LoPresti said he could be discharged from Rood & Riddle in 3-5 days."
