Comma to the Top can do on short rest

Comma to the Top, a winner of 11 of 27 lifetime, comes East just one week after a bang-up effort in the Grade 2 San Carlos. Doing all the dirty work that day, the five-year-old gelding was part of a contested early pace that featured a sub- :44 half. He was able to shake free briefly before succumbing to a pair of talented stretch runners. The ¾ of a length loss in the seven furlong race was every bit as good as it looks on paper. In the Tom Fool, he looks to be the speed of the speed and draws an advantageous inside post position to flaunt his talent. Just in case there is pressure early, Comma to the Top has demonstrated the ability to also stalk and go as well. While it is never easy to ship cross country and win a graded stake, in the Tom Fool, I believe he is making a step down in class and I look for him to show his class and his heels to his competition today. Joel Rosario picks up the mount for trainer, Peter Miller. His top competition may well come from the other Californian. Smash has made only one start in the past 14 months for trainer Bob Baffert, but is a colt with significant talent. That return race was solid, finishing just over a length behind the top pick. His one previous trip East resulted in a solid performance at Calder back in 2011. He might be the only that can match Comma to the Top on talent. Of the East Coast contingent, Off the Jak is the one that interests me most. The gelding is coming in off career best form in Florida, including a sharp score two starts back in the Sunshine Millions Sprint. New York-bred, Head Heart Hoof also comes in on career best form, but might find this new competition a little tougher than he is accustomed.
