With ten 2-year-olds in training being sold for a quarter million or more, yesterday’s Barretts March Select Sale was considered a success. Both the average price and the sale topping purchase were up considerably from 2012. Not surprisingly, Irish bloodstock agent Demi O'Byrne, acting on behalf of Coolmore, was the day’s big buyer, snatching up the two highest priced colts of the sale.
While two-year-olds in training may or may not be your thing, I find it extremely helpful and interesting to see that all of the youngsters in the sale can be seen working out on video. Hopefully you will find watching these youngsters working out, brief as they may be, as interesting as I did. Thanks to Barretts and Youtube, I even picked out a few that I will be keeping an eye on this year, and down the road. Within the first video, Hip #27 can be viewed. The bay colt by Malibu Moon, out of Fashion Cat was the sale topper at $675,000, and you can take a look at how he moves at the 8:33 mark of the first video. The eighth highest sale of the day was Hip #26, a dark bay colt by Broken Vow, out of Exquisite Beauty. Selling for $270,000, he was purchased by Big Red Farm of Japan, who happen to stand champion, I’ll Have Another. He can be viewed at the 8:09 mark. Finally, Hip #12, a bay filly by Henrythenavigator, out of Delighted Cat, who sold for $310,000, making her the sixth biggest price of the day, can be seen working at 9:17 into the video below.
The second video features the second highest selling two-year-old, Hip #67. The grey colt by Dunkirk, out of Missy Turtle brought $575,000, and can be seen at the 9:17 mark. Also, Hip #42, a dark bay filly by Unbridled's Song, out of Jera, a $260,000 purchase, can be found 2:54 into the next video.
The third video features four of the top ten sellers. Hip #97, a dark bay colt by War Front, out of Seasoned, sold for $570,000, and can be viewed at the 9:47 mark. Also, Hip #86, a bay filly by Tapit, out of Punch Appeal ($320,000) at 5:41, Hip #84, a bay colt by Exchange Rate, out of Perfect Paula ($250,000) at 4:53, and Hip #92, a dark bay colt by Harlan's Holiday, out of Rietondale ($250,000) at 8:12, can also be found in this video.
And finally the fourth video includes the highest priced filly, and fourth highest sale of the day, with Hip #116, by Harlan's Holiday, out of Tasha's Star. She was purchased for $325,000, and can be seen at the 2:48 mark.
