Who Will Command the Frizette Stakes?

In the last eleven years, three outstanding fillies, Indian Blessing, Storm Flag Flying and 2011 Champ My Miss Aurelia have captured both the Frizette Stakes (G-1) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Although only those three special fillies won both races in over a decade, seven youngsters that won or placed in the Frizette also finished second or third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. The last was Dreaming of Julia in 2012. The Frizette heroine finished third behind Beholder in the Juvenile Fillies.

Undefeated graded stakes winners Cavorting and Condo Commando will clash in the one mile Frizette along with five other talented fillies. Besides a trophy, check and a very nice photo, the winner will receive a reserved spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies starting gate.  All except two of these fillies were mentioned on the Kiddie List. Let’s review the field.

CAVORTING (Bernardini - Promenade Girl, by Carson City) was wide the entire way in the Adirondack Stakes, but the daughter of Preakness hero Bernardini passed the future Del mar Debutante heroine Angela Rene and listed stakes winner Wonder Gal on her way to a 1 ¾ length victory.  The well-bred Cavorting is s a daughter of the 2006 Maryland Champion Older Mare PROMENADE GIRL. This is the distaff family of the multiple graded stakes winners ANOTHER REVIEW, DANCE COLONY, who also won the  Adirondack, Swaps hero BLUESKIESNRAINBOWS, and Santa Barbara Handicap heroine NO REVIEW.  Cavorting’s fourth dam Dumfries is a blue hen. Cavorting owns the highest speed figure in the field.

WONDER GAL (Tiz Wonderful - Passe, by Dixie Union) raced along the rail and was in tight in the final stages of the Adirondack Stakes, but held her position to finish third. This promising filly has raced only twice and should improve through her three year old season. Wonder Gal’s unraced dam is a half to the multiple graded stakes winner SOCIAL QUEEN. Her second through fifth dams all own blacktype.  Wonder Gal’s third dam is a half sister to the multiple graded stakes winning veteran PERFECT DRIFT.  Wonder Gal has a sprinter/miler pedigree.

RING KNOCKER (Birdstone - Pearls, by Black Tie Affair (IRE)) has yet to visit the winner’s circle.  By The Moon beat her by ¾ length in their debut. In her next start, Ring Knocker mixed it up in a speed duel and couldn’t sustain her bid. She finished second, beaten a length. It was more than nine lengths back to the third place finisher. The pretty gray filly has the pedigree to prefer two turns. Her dam is a half to the multiple G-2 winning sprinter BANK AUDIT and second dam MOSQUERA is a stakes winner.  Ring Knocker gets first time Lasix.  The Albertrani barn is 12% with that angle.

FEATHERED (Indian Charlie - Receipt, by Dynaformer) winged it on the front end to win by 9+ lengths in her second start. The Pletcher trainee earned a huge 106 late pace speed figure.  Feathered is a result of careful Phipps/Claiborne breeding. Her second dam FINDER’S FEE was a top race mare, earning wins as a juvenile in the Matron and Astoria, both (G-1) stakes and at three she won the Acorn and placed in the Test and Mother Goose. Feathered’s third dam FANTASTIC FIND is a Grade 1 winner. Additionally, her  third dam Blitey and fourth dam LADY PITT are blue hens. Feathered owns the highest late pace speed figure in the field.

CAYMAN CROC (Bob and John - Cayman Sunset, by Wolf Power (SAF))  won her debut in an off the turf contest at Delaware Park by 1 ½ lengths.  The pretty gray filly is a half sister to the multiple graded stakes winning sprinter SAILORS SUNSET, stakes winner SAILOR'S SISTER, and stakes placed Rival Islands. Their dam is a stakes winning sprinter and a half sister to the dam of Alcibiades heroine WICKEDLY PERFECT.  Cayman Croc has posted a series of sprightly breezes for trainer Kelly Breen.

CONDO COMMANDO (Tiz Wonderful - Yearly Report, by General Meeting) treated the Spinaway field much like she did a group of maidens in her debut.  Both times, she drag raced out of the starting gate and was gone, embarrassing both groups by a combined 25 lengths.   Condo Commando is a half sister to True North (G-2) placed Checklist.  Their dam is a multiple G-2 winner from 7 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. The second dam FISCAL YEAR is also a stakes winner. Condo Commando may have to deal with other early speed, but if they let her go, she’ll be jogging back to the winner’s circle before the rest of them can catch up.

BY THE MOON (Indian Charlie - By the Light, by Malibu Moon) was three and four wide in the Spinaway and simply the best of the rest, beating Angela Renee by six lengths.  Her precocious dam won all four starts at two, and is a multiple stakes earner of almost $900K.  By The Moon draws the far outside and can sit back while the speed tires out. However, trainer Michelle Nevin is 0-11 in graded stakes.

SELECTIONS:
Rain is in the forecast and the track may be sloppy.   We know that CONDO COMMANDO loves to play in the puddles and BY THE MOON handled it as well.  CAVORTING has an excellent pedigree for mud and should also enjoy it.  WONDERGAL and FEATHERED could also enjoy getting their hooves muddy.

#6  CONDO COMMANDO
#4  FEATHERED
#1  CAVORTING
#7  BY THE MOON – longshot pick
