Uncaptured has Derby Connections

Uncaptured broke sharply
in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Jockey Miguel
Mena had a ton of horse in the early stages, and kept a strong
hold on Uncaptured while galloping off of the flank of pace setter
Track
Rocker for the first half mile. Uncaptured inherited the lead
after a half mile as Track Rocker backed out of the fray. Frac
Daddy, who raced four wide most of the way, quickly challenged
Uncaptured. That one wasn't put to a drive until mid stretch, when
Frac Daddy passed him momentarily. Uncaptured fought back gamely in
the stretch to seize victory by a neck over the hard-trying Frac
Daddy. It was 1 ¾ lengths back to the fast closing Dewey
Square. Uncaptured traveled 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.97. The final
time was more than two seconds slower than 1:42.83 , the time set by
2010's Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes hero Super Saver.
UNCAPTURED
(Lion Heart – Captivating, by Arch) was a $290K September '11
Yearling purchase by Mark Casse for owner John Oxley. The son of
Lionheart flashed precocious talent right out of the gate, winning
his first four races, including the Clarendon,
Vandal
and Swynford
Stakes at Woodbine. Sent of as the favorite in the Grey Stakes (G-3),
Uncaptured had a nightmare trip. He was shuffled back, caught wide
and had to check in the final furlong. He placed fifth in the race,
the only blemish on an otherwise perfect race. Just two weeks later,
Uncaptured shipped to Churchill to contest the Iroquois Stakes.
Coming back to the races quickly, shipping and trying dirt for the
first time in his young life, Uncaptured had every right to regress.
He again had to steady in traffic around the turn, but once Mena
turned him loose, Uncaptured lived up to his name with a runaway 5 ½
length performance. The field included the well-bred stakes placed
runner Positively, Grade 2 winner Overanalyzed (who would win the
Remsen Stakes (G-2) on the same day as Uncaptured won the Kentucky
Jockey Club Stakes) and Arlington-Washington Futurity (G-3) hero
Pataky Kid. In his fledgling career, Uncaptured has compiled a
7-6-0-0 ($510,837) race record and has 10 points in the new Kentucky
Derby Points System.
Sire:
Uncatured is displaying
the same hard-trying tenacity that his sire, Lion Heart showed in the
2004 Kentucky Derby, where he finished second to Smarty Jones,
despite making the pace the entire way. Lion Heart finished off of
the board in only two starts in his career, the Preakness and Travers
Stakes.
Lion Heart retired to
Coolemore Stud at the end of his racing career in 2004. He was #2 on
the first crop sire board in 2008, #6 on the second crop sire list
and was the leading third crop sire in the USA in 2010. Despite his
excellent record at stud, Lion Heart was sold to stand stud in Turkey
in 2010 after only six years at stud in the US. Lion Heart's
offspring, like their sire, are best up to 1 1/8 miles. He has
produced one winner at 1 ¼ miles, Breeders' Cup Turf longshot winner
Dangerous Midge.

Female Family:
Uncaptured's dam
Captivating (Arch – Andrea Ruckus, by Bold Ruckus) didn't hit the
board in two career starts. She's proving to be a strong broodmare,
as her first foal, Dancing Raven (by Tomahawk) is a two-time stakes
winner and has placed in stakes races from six furlongs to 1 1/16
miles over turf and Woodbine's Polytrack. Uncaptured is
Captivating's first colt and second stakes winner. She bore two
fillies that haven't raced. Captivating has a 2011 yearling colt by
Badge of Silver and a Majestic Warrior weanling.
Captivating is a half
sister to Gold Star Deputy (by Silver Deputy) a two-time stakes
winner ( 5 ½ F, 1 1/8 miles). A half sister Eastern Ruckus (by
Eastern Echo) bore the two-time stakes winner Lady Echo (by Alphabet
Soup) and multiple stakes placed Whatdreamsrmadeof (by Graeme Hall).
Uncaptured's second dam Andrea Ruckus is stakes placed.
There are a smattering of
stakes winners in Uncaptured's third generation. Farther back, 1978
Canadion Champion Giboulee is a member of this female family.
Damsire:
Uncaptured's
damsire Arch was victorious from seven furlongs to 1 ¼ miles and
counts the Super Derby (G-1) as his most important victory. In all,
the Claiborne Farm homebred raced seven times, winning five contests
and placing once, with career earnings of $480,969.
After
retiring to stud at his birthplace, Arch quickly proved that would
become a quality sire, getting a South African Champion Sprinter
(Overarching), English Champion Older Horse (Les Arcs) and four other
multiple stakes winners in his first crop. In ensuing years Arch
sired Canadian Champion Arrivale and Breeders’ Cup Champion and
Horse of the Year, Blame. Although he has produced some swift
sprinters, Arch is building a reputation for getting long-winded
runners.
Arch
is a young broodmare sire, yet already claims a two-time Classic
winner amongst his daughters' offspring. Last year, the popular I’ll
Have Another (Flower Alley – Arch's Gal Edith) triumphed in the
Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Arch is also represented at the
classic distance by a French Listed Stakes winner at 1 1/4 miles over
the turf. His daughter’s progeny include Champion Juvenile Uncle
Mo and Contested, heroine of the Eight Bells Stakes. Arch’s
pedigree and record at stud indicate that his daughters are passing
along stamina influences. Arch is one of the most promising young
sires of this generation.

Career
Highlights:
1st
- Super Derby (G-1) - 1 ¼ miles
1st
- Fayette Stakes (G-3) 1 3/16 miles
Uncaptured's
second damsire Bold Ruckus (Boldnesian – Raise a Ruckus, by Raise
A Native) was a speedy stakes sprinter who owned wins at 5 ½ – 6
furlongs. He placed going a mile and 1 1/8 miles. He was a top sire
in Canada for many years. Despite being distance challenged on the
racetrack, Bold Ruckus was deemed an Intermediate/Classic Chef de
Race, indicating that he passes stamina attributes to his offspring.
The
cross of Lion Heart with Arch mares has yielded five foals, three of
whom have raced and won, including Uncaptured's blacktype victories.
The bloodline combinations of Lion Heart and his sire Tale of the Cat
crossed with those of Arch and his sire Kris S. are potent. They have
resulted in 20 starters, 19 winners and one blacktype earner.
Summary:
Uncaptured's
sire Lion Heart is light on classic attributes, offering more speed
than stamina. However, the colt's distaff side offers the necessary
stamina needed for Uncaptured to become a legitimate Classic
contender.
Uncaptured
has ties to the Kentucky Derby. His sire finished second in the
race. He share's the same damsire as last year's Derby winner. Like
Classic victor Super Saver, Uncaptured owns a win in the Kentucky
Jockey Club Stakes. Also, Uncaptured is a Canadian-bred, just like
his fifth tail sire Northern Dancer and 1983 Derby champ Sunny's
Halo.
Additionally,
John
Oxley, Uncaptured's owner, is no stranger to the winners' circle
at Churchill Downs. He owns 2001 Derby hero Monarchos, who recorded
the second fastest winning time in the history of the prestigious
race. Mr. Oxley also campaigned Beautiful Pleasure, 1999 Champion
Older Female.
Uncaptured
has shown a liking for the Churchill dirt. He's beaten stakes winners
and has the pedigree to be competitive at 1 ¼ miles. Should he
carry his form into next year's stakes races and stay healthy,
Uncaptured has a strong claim to become Canada's next Kentucky Derby
hero.
