The Kiddie List - June 29, 2014

The Kiddie List searches for the best and brightest of this next generation of two year olds. Dullahan, El Padrino, Take Charge Indy, Union Rags, Creative Cause, Drill, Dreaming of Julia, Beholder, Kauai Katie, Emollient, Fortify and countless other runners were featured on the Kiddie List before they hit the national radar. Many juveniles that were introduced on the Kiddie List rewarded their backers with double digit wins.

The Kiddie List will spotlight the top workers and blue bloods breezing four furlongs and farther, plus some entries and results.  I’ll cover the New York, Kentucky, California and Florida tracks, and occasionally Arlington, Fair Hill and Monmouth.    If a particularly well bred baby shows up at another track, I’ll include that one as well. Due to the enormous number of juveniles, some of these names may show up only once or twice.  You can find more of this season’s two year olds on the 2015 Kentucky Derby Contenders and 2015 Kentucky Oaks Contenders  lists. 

RECENT WINNERS

CINCO CHARLIE (Indian Charlie - Ten Halos, by Marquetry) (C) $190K OBSMAR14; The 1 ¼ length wire-to-wire winner of the Bashford Manor (G-3) Stakes is undefeated in two starts. From the last crop of deceased sire Indian Charlie, Cinco Charlie is the first of his three siblings to earn blacktype. His juvenile stakes placed dam is a half sister to multiple graded stakes winners and sires BWANA CHARLIE and his full brother, MY PAL CHARLIE (by Indian Charlie) plus BWANA BULL (by Holy Bull).  Cinco Charlie’s pedigree is a mix of middle distance speed over sprint speed. He certainly has the speed part down pat – as he set fractions of :21.89, :45.69 and :5763 on his way to a final time of 1:10.36 for six furlongs. The last winners of the Bashford Manor to hit the board in the BC Juvie were Kodiak Kowboy (third) in 2007 and Circular Quay (second) in 2006. The last colt to win/place in the Grade 3 event and have an influence on the following year’s Classics was 1989 Bashford Manor champ Summer Squall.   I expect that Cinco Charlie will hit his distance limit around 1 1/16 miles. ENCHANTING LADY (Tale of the Cat - A. P. Baby, by A.P. Indy) (F) $650K OBSMAR14;  After placing second in her troubled debut behind Seduire, the Bob Baffert trainee won her maiden in the Landaluce Stakes by a bewitching 6 ¼ lengths. In the early stages of the Landaluce, Enchanting Lady chased early fractions of :21.67, :45.05 set by runner-up Seduire before taking over and flashing under the wire in 1:03.94 for the 5 ½ furlongs.  She beat eight other fillies.  Her unraced dam is a half to the stakes placed Shared Heart and the second dam Seeking the Heart is also stakes placed.  Third dam CORRAZONA is a French graded winner who also captured the Beverly Hills Handicap (G-1).  So why did Enchanting Lady cost so much? She worked a furlong in :10 1/5 at the sales.  Last year’s Landaluce heroine won the Breeders’ Cup Juvie Fillies, but was DQ’ed to second.  Enchanting Lady has the pedigree to easily handle 1 1/6 miles and 1 1/8 miles could be in her scope as she matures.

Mr. Z (Malibu Moon - Stormy Bear, by Storm Cat) (C ) $135K FTKOCT13;  In his Churchill debut in Race 3 at Churchill Downs on June 28, Mr. Z  battled with the pace setter as they threw down early fractions of :21.54, :45.12 and :57.90 for the first five furlongs. Mr. Z prevailed over his rival by ½ length at the wire in a final time of 1:11.76 for the six furlongs.  Mr. Z is a half to the UAE stakes placed Ibn Al Nafis (by Distorted Humor). The dam Stormy Bear is a half to Champion Turf horse CHIEF BEARHEART, Hollywood Derby (G-1) winner EXPLOSIVE RED, stakes winner RUBY RANSOM and the stakes placed runners Memorized and Sundown Serenade.  Mr. Z has a 4 x 4 Rasmussen Factor inbreeding to the blue hen Gold Digger, who is Mr. Z’s fourth dam. Gold Digger is also the dam of Mr. Prospector, Malibu Moon’s damsire.  Trained by Wayne Lukas, expect to see Mr. Z show up at Saratoga this summer. Photo by Jen Jade.

Tiz Town  (Tiznow - Bird Town, by Cape Town) (C)   stumbled at the start of the start and finished 7^th behind Mr. Z.  Tiz Town was mentioned on the June 13 Kiddie List (at the Iron Maidens Thoroughbreds blog). Only four of seven half siblings of racing age made to the track.  None own blacktype, and only two won.  One of the two hit the board as a 2YO.  The dam was Champion 3YO filly and half sister to Belmont Stakes winner and sire BIRDSTONE.  The second dam Dear Birdie is a blue hen.  Tiz Town is trained by Ian Wilkes. I don’t expect Tiz Town to be precocious and he should love two turns. Great pedigree, but so far, the dam hasn’t re-produced anywhere close to her form.

Alzanbaq (Harlan's Holiday - Breathtaking, by Mineshaft) (C)  $400K KEENOV12; He finished 8^th behind Mr. Z. Not to worry, his sire’s offspring only win 13% first time out and this guy is bred to enjoy two turns. His dam failed to hit the board in 3 starts, but she’s a product of careful Phipps family breeding.  She’s a half to graded stakes placed Pick Six (Dynaformer) and Conservative (Unbridled’s Song).  Second dam OH WHAT A WINDFALL won the G-1 Matron as a 2YO.  She’s a full sister to 2YO Champion Filly HEAVENLY PRIZE and Dancinginmydreams, who placed in the Matron. These fillies bore G-1 victors DANCING FOREVER, GOOD REWARD, plus G-2 winner and sire PURE PRIZE. Heavenly Prize is the granddam of Personal Ensign (G-1) heroine PERSISTANTLY. Alzanbaq’s fourth and fifth dams are the blue hens BLITEY  and LADY PITT. If Alzanbaq runs to his potential, he could mature into a very good horse. Photo by Jen Jade.

Angela Renee (Bernardini - Pilfer, by Deputy Minister) (F)  is a full sister to multiple G-1 stakes winner and sire TO HONOR AND SERVE, and a half to stakes placed Elnaawi (by Street Sense). In her Belmont Park debut on June 27, Angela Renee was hustled early while chasing the early pace.  She challenged the leaders on the turn and dueled down to the wire, edging clear by 2 ½ lengths under a hand ride. The Todd Pletcher trainee stopped the clock in a brisk :57.90 for the five furlongs. Angela Renee was mentioned in the June 11 Kiddie List.

Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway - Charming, by Seeking the Gold) (F) $435K KEESEP13; Mentioned on the June 11 Kiddie List at the IMT blog.  Out classed a herd of seven maiden fillies at Churchill on June 22, running 4 ½  furlongs in :52.26. Her dam is a half to Florida Derby winner TAKE CHARGE INDY and multiple G-1 winner WILL TAKE CHARGE. The second dam is multiple stakes winning mare, TAKE CHARGE LADY, who is rapidly approaching blue hen status.  The Lukas trainee is targeting the Schuylerville Stakes (G-3) on July 18 at Saratoga.

Winter Dawn (Sky Mesa - Reboot, by Rubiano) (F) $185K FTSAUG13; June 28  4F :49.00 (12/54);  This one has a superior Polypedigree. She’s a half to stakes winner SUMMER CRUISE (by Vicar) and to Rebuttal (Mr. Greeley) who placed in the Middle Park (Eng. Gr.1).  Reboot has Rasmussen Factor inbreeding to the blue hen FOGGY NOTE through full siblings RELAUNCH (Reboot’s second damsire) and MOON GLITTER (second dam of Rubiano). Winter Dawn’s second dam LAUNCH LIGHT TEK is a G-3 winner.   

Heart of Midway (Stevie Wonderboy - Kittery Point, by Include) (F) June 28  5F 1:00.00 (1/35);  Two of her half siblings raced and both are winners. Her stakes placed dam is a half to stakes winner and G-2 placed TIFFANY DIAMOND (Tiffany Ice). This is a stakes producing distaff line.  Kittery Point’s half sisters bore QE II (G-1) heroine SWEET TALKER, her half brother multiple G-3 winner and sire SILVER MEDALLION, multiple G-1 winners INCLUDE ME OUT (Santa Margarita Inv., Clement L. Hirsch, etc.), CHECK THE LABEL (Garden City, Sands Point, etc.), plus stakes winners ON THE MENU and HADDIE BE GOOD.  2YO Champ Stevie Wonderboy didn’t live up to his promise at stud, but he is a very good (20%) polysire.

El Kabeir (Scat Daddy - Great Venue, by Unbridled's Song) (C) $250k OBSAUG13; June 28, 4F :47.61 (3/58) gate breeze. He’s a first foal. His unraced dam is a half to multiple graded stakes winning sprinter TOO MUCH BLING (by Rubiano), plus listed/restricted stakes winners READY FOR ROSES (More Than Ready) BARNSY (Langfuhr), LITTLEBITABLING (Carson City) and stakes placed Got Bling (Langfuhr).  The second dam Rose Colored Lady is a stakes winner and a full to a restricted multiple stakes winner. Scat Daddy’s babies are best over turf/Poly. The pretty gray El Kabeir has some turf attributes through Nijinsky, Lyphard, Green Desert and Cairo, so we may see him on the lawn.

Refer (Divine Park - Allude, by Orientate) (C) $70K OBSAPR14; June 28, 4F :48.02 (12/58) gate breeze. He’s a full to DANCINGINTHECIRCLE, who placed in the Arlington-Washington Lassie (G-2) at two.  His dam is a multiple stakes placed sprinter.  Third dam Sharon Brown gave us HOY  HOLY BULL and she’s the granddam of Alabama (G-1) heroine SWEET SYMPHONY.  Divine Park’s babies win 20% first time out and they’re best over fast dirt.

Accord (Lemon Drop Kid - Hug It Out, by Medaglia d'Oro) (F) $190K KEESEP12;  June 28, 5F 1:01.06 (3/14) dirt training, gate breeze. Her dam hit the board in 3 of 5 starts as a 2 YO, including a stakes placed effort.  Hug it Out is a half to West Virginia Derby (G-2) victor MACHO MACHO. The second dam is a half to multiple graded stakes turfer DESIGNED FOR LUCK and third dam is G-1 winner FANTASTIC LOOK.  Accord should appreciate longer sprints through middle distance or even classic distances over dirt or turf.

Wonder Gal (Tiz Wonderful - Passe, by Dixie Union) (F) $210K OBSMAR13;  June 28, 5F 1:00.02 (1/14)   dirt training, gate breeze. She’s a first foal.  Her dam is a half to multiple G-3 winner SOCIAL QUEEN (Dynaformer). Her second, third and fourth dams all own blacktype and G-1 winning stakes veteran PERFECT DRIFT is a member of this female family.   Keep an eye on Wonder Gal. Her sire gets 44% 2YO winners and 20% first time starters. If it rains, run to the window, she has a superior mud pedigree.

GULFSTREAM PARK

Of Course (Awesome of Course - I Am Nifty, by Unbridled's Song) (C) June 27,  4f :46.47 (1/11);  He’s a half to juvie stakes winner HEAR YE HEAR YE (by Hear No Evil) and the dam was stakes placed as a juvenile.  This is his first breeze after winning his maiden on June 15. Of Course completed five furlongs in :58.87 over a fast Gulfstream track.  

Frolic to the Wire (Roman Ruler - Stormy Frolic, by Summer Squall) (F) $95K OBSAPR14; June 27, 1 M 1:49.35 (1/2); She’s a half to FROLIC'S REVENGE, a multiple stakes winner whose victories include the Lindsay Frolic (race named for their second dam), and the Calder Oaks. Their dam is a stakes winner half sister to G-2 winner SUPER FROLIC.  Third dam is multiple stakes winner Cherokee Frolic, who also had a race named in her honor. Frolic to the Wire was off slow and never a factor in her debut on June 14 at Gulfstream.

Whitcomb Hill (Saint Anddan - Harliday, by Harlan's Holiday) (C) June 27, 1 M 1:49.35 (1/2); He’s a half to multiple stakes winner HOLIDAY MAGIC (by Congrats), who won the Brace Raj Stakes as a two year old. That’s it for blacktype in the immediate distaff family, although stakes winner and multiple G-1 stakes placed BARONESS THATCHER is part of this female family.

Royal Grant (Line of David - Agnes Rose, by Beau Genius) (C) $42K OBSMAR14; June 28, 4F :47.88 (6/51) gate breeze.  This is his third gate breeze. Royal Grant is a half to stakes winner and multiple graded stakes placed FAMOUS PATRIOT (by Repent). Four of his seven half siblings have raced and three have won. Two raced as two year olds, one hit the board. Freshman sire Line of David, a son of Lion Hearted, won the 1 1/8 mile Arkansas Derby.  So far, his offspring are 0-6.  The offspring that I’ve seen are large, two turn looking types and may need some time to mature. Damsire Beau Genius won stakes from 6F to 1 ¼ miles. The dam is a half to stakes winners HATPIN and LORDLY PROSPECT plus two stakes placed runners.  Royal Grant may prefer longer sprints and could become a middle-distance type.
