The Kiddie List - July 7, 2014

The Kiddie List will spotlight the top workers and blue bloods breezing four furlongs and farther, plus some entries and results.  I’ll cover the New York, Kentucky, California and Florida tracks, and occasionally Arlington, Fair Hill and Monmouth. If a particularly well bred baby shows up at another track, I’ll include that one as well. Due to the enormous number of juveniles, some of these names may show up only once or twice.  You can find more of this season’s two year olds on the 2015 Kentucky Derby Contenders and 2015 Kentucky Oaks Contenders lists. 

RECENT WINNERS RECAP

Cavorting (Bernardini - Promenade Girl, by Carson City) (F) $360K KEENOV13; In a field decimated by three scratches, Cavorting made easy work of the three fillies who faced her in the fourth race at Belmont on July 3. Irad Ortiz, Jr. was just a passenger as Cavorting lived up to her name, ticking off swift fractions of :22.14, :45.82, and :58.31 under her own power.  The Kiaran McLaughlin trainee sauntered under the wire in 1:11.37, eleven lengths ahead of her nearest competitor, Sweet Maya.  Cavorting is a daughter of the 2006 Maryland Champion Older Mare. This is the distaff family of the multiple graded stakes winners ANOTHER REVIEW (Californian S., etc.), DANCE COLONY (Adirondack S. 2^nd in Gazelle), Swaps hero BLUESKIESNRAINBOWS, and Santa Barbara Handicap heroine NO REVIEW.  The fourth dam Dumfries is a blue hen. Bernardini’s babies only win 10% first time out, but Cavorting’s damsire Carson City adds some win-early speed to her pedigree. Cavorting should stretch out to 1 1/6 miles without a problem.

New to the Kiddie List is Mr Lightning Boy (Discreetly Mine - Unhurried, by Out of Place) (C) $47K (RNA) KEESEP13.    In his debut at Arlington on July 3, the Dale Bennett trainee was bumped at the start. He chased the pace from third place, three lengths behind the dueling pace setters in this five furlong race.  After tracking fractions of :22.99 and :47.06, Mr. Lightning Boy took aim on the leaders, going three wide around the turn.  The pace setter, Noandsifsrbuts was 4 ½ lengths clear in the stretch and looked like a sure winner. But Mr. Lightning Boy, spurred on by Texas Red on his outside, caught up with the floundering pace setter in the shadow of the wire, holding off the dueling Texas Red by a neck, with Noandsifsrbuts ½ length back in third.  Mr. Lightning Boy flashed under the wire in 1:00.65.  The colt is a half to juvenile stakes placed turf sprinter Show the Way J (Forest Camp) and stakes placed Miss Maggie Girl (Malibu Moon) who is also stakes placed on the lawn. Their dam is stakes placed on turf and a half to the stakes winning turf mare LIBOR LADY and stakes placed Hidden Creek.  Mr. Lightning Boy has some quality in his pedigree.  He’s line-bred to Damascus 4X4 through a son and daughter, both of whom are out of mares by Buckpasser.  Mr. Lightning Boy is the second winner from seven starters for his first crop sire.  Mr. Lightning Boy’s half siblings also won over dirt, so the colt may be adaptable in the future.

Secured Position (Patriot Act - Joan's Rose, by Service Stripe) (C) Ignored at 32-1, Secured Position surprised a field of eight rivals in the second race at Belmont on June 3.  Breaking from post 1, jockey Manuel Franco hustled the colt out to the lead in the 5 ½ furlong maiden race for New-York breds.  They set early fractions of  :22.47 and :46.22 while being pushed by Persuasive Devil and Navy Blue to their outside. Secured Position stubbornly widened his lead to 1 ½ lengths under aggressive handling in the stretch, getting five furlongs in :59.37 and hitting the wire in 1::06.40.  Secured Position is a full brother to restricted stakes placed Social Rebellion. That one owns the only blacktype in three generations of his female family.

One to watch from this race is Lookin At Lucky’s son Good Luck Gus. The colt sat mid-pack for much of the race and closed like a freight train down the center of the stretch, closing within 1 ¼ lengths of Secured Position. Good Luck Gus jumped tire tracks three strides from the wire and was in front of Secured Position about four strides after the wire.   

WONDER GAL (Tiz Wonderful - Passe, by Dixie Union) (F) $210K $210,00014;  Sunday July 5^th, Wonder Gal won her debut and earned a stakes win in the Lynbrook Stakes at Belmont. Breaking from the outside in a field of five fillies, jockey Taylor Rice let Wonder Gal get her stride, while settling about eight lengths behind the pace setters. After three furlongs, the Leah Gyarmati trainee was given her cue. Circling three wide, Wonder Gal lived up to her name, quickly pulling away to win by 14 ½ lengths, getting the six furlongs in 1:11.14.  Wonder Gal is the first foal borne of her dam. The unraced Passe is a half to Gallorette (G-3) heroine Social Queen.  Second dam Gal on the Go is a multiple stakes winning miler. The multiple G-1 winning warrior PERFECT DRIFT was produced by this distaff line.

Two Six Wins (Midshipman - Friona, by Allen's Prospect) (C) $60K (RNA) OBSMAR14;  Fighting every step of the way, first with One More Bid and then Dream Police, the Michael Pender trainee threw down early splits of :21.93 and :45.87.  Jockey Joe Talamo shook the colt lose in the stretch to win by 1 ¾ lengths, hitting the wire in a sharp :57.90 for five furlongs at Los Alamitos.   Two Six Wins is a half brother to the juvenile stakes placed Doc O Dynamite (Successful Appeal). His dam is a full-sister to Stakes winner Fort Dodge, and a half-sister to stakes winner Berdelia. Another half sister, stakes-placed Turning Around, is the granddam of G-3 winner HARD ENOUGH.  Two Six Wins seond and third dams all own blacktype and the popular New York stakes veteran GANDER was produced by this distaff line. Two Six Wins is his first crop sire’s fourth winner from six starters.

Fierce Tide (Shakespeare - Silk Ridge, by Eltish) (C) The third time was the charm for this son of G-1 turf horse Shakespeare.  The longshot dueled in a five furlong maiden race carded at Gulfstream on July 6 and held on for a neck victory, stopping the timer in :59.68.  His dam SILK RIDGE won the Susan's Girl, Desert Vixen and Brave Raj as a two year old. Fierce Tide remarkably carries only two strains of Northern Dancer bloodlines and no Bold Ruler or Mr. Prospector.  Fierce Tide may eventually find his way to the lawn as a miler.
