The Kiddie List - July 24, 2014
The Kiddie List will spotlight the top workers and blue bloods breezing four furlongs and farther, plus some entries and results. I’ll cover the New York, Kentucky, California and Florida tracks, and occasionally Arlington, Fair Hill and Monmouth. If a particularly well bred baby shows up at another track, I’ll include that one as well. Due to the enormous number of juveniles, some of these names may show up only once or twice. You can find more of this season’s two year olds on the 2015 Kentucky Derby Contenders and 2015 Kentucky Oaks Contenders lists.

Saratoga Race 2 | 5 ½ F (Turf) | 2YO Fillies
Up late to win by a head, Rainha Da Bateria (Broken Vow - Amelia, by Dixieland Band) (F) $435K KEESEP12; She’s a half to MSW KINDERGARDEN KID (by Dynaformer), stakes winner ASSATEAGUE (by Stormy Atlantic) and stakes placed He's Had Enough (by Tapit). In this distaff family, the colts have proven to be the better runners. Out of three fillies, only one has hit the board and she’s a stakes winner. Four of five half siblings raced and hit the board as 2YO. The first two dams own blacktype and the second dam is a full sister to Champion 3YO Filly ALTHEA. Third dam is the blue hen, Courtly Dee. Rainha Da Bateria is trained by Graham Motion.

Del Mar | Race 4 | MSW 5F | 2YO Fillies
After dueling between horses, Tara’s Tango took the lead and opened up in the stretch, winning by 3 ½ lengths, setting a new track record of :57.40 for the five furlongs. Tara's Tango (Unbridled's Song - Scarlet Tango, by French Deputy) (F) is a half to King’s Bishop (G-1) hero VISIONAIRE and to SCARLET STRIKE (by Smart Strike), winner of the Providencia Stakes (G-3), and Scarlet Strike also placed in the Chandelier and Hollywood Starlet, both Grade 1 events, as a two year old. Their dam placed in the Laura Gal Stakes at two and she’s a half to juvie stakes winner OUR COMMANDER, multiple stakes winner DALE'S PROSPECT, and juvie stakes placed Bumpy Road. Tara’s Tango is trained by is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.
Del Mar | Race 8 | MSW 5F | 2YO Fillies
Off slow, Luminance swung six wide in the stretch and dominated a nice group of well-bred fillies by 2 ½ lengths, shaving a tick off of the track record set four races earlier by Tara’s Tango. Luminance now owns the track record of :57.39 for five furlongs over the Polytrack. Luminance (Tale of the Cat - Siren Serenade, by Unbridled's Song) (F) $320K KEESEP13; Her dam is a ¾ sister to Remsen Stakes winner SAARLAND and a half to BC Juvie Turf (G-1) winner GEORGE VANCOUVER. Second dam is Multiple Grade 1 winner VERSAILLES TREATY. Luminance is trained by Bob Baffert. In her pre-race breeze, Luminance out-worked Baffert’s promising colt Lord Nelson.

Saratoga Race 7 | Sanford Stakes 6F | 2YO
BIG TROUBLE (Tiz Wonderful - Silver Lullaby, by Najran) was up to win a thrilling edition of the Sanford Stakes by a neck. He’s now two for two for trainer Tony Dutrow. Big Trouble is a full brother to the stakes placed sprinter Silver Lining John. Their dam is a half to graded stakes winners SUNSHINE FOR LIFE and TUBOK. Big Trouble will likely be distance challenged beyond 1 1/16 miles.
Del Mar Race 1 | MSW 5F | 2YO
In a textbook ride by Martin Garcia, LORD NELSON stalked the pace from fourth place on the inside, swung out three wide around the turn, took aim on the leaders, then breezed home 1 ½ lengths in front, stopping the timer in :58.01 for five panels. Lord Nelson (Pulpit - African Jade, by Seeking the Gold) (C) $340K KEESEP13; is a first foal. His second dam is Argentinean Champion 3YO Filly MISS LINDA who also raced in the U.S. against Azeri and Take Charge Lady. Miss Linda captured the Spinster Stakes (G-1) Sabin Stakes (G-3). So far, none of her progeny have earned blacktype. Lord Nelson should enjoy stretching out around two turns and is trained by Bob Baffert.
Another Kiddie List baby in the same race was fourth place finisher Iron Fist. That one was off slow for jockey Mike Smith, sat in last place, went four wide around the turn and made up ground in the stretch to gain fourth place. It was a good effort for a colt who will likely prefer running longer. Keep him on your watch list for his next outing. Iron Fist (Tapit - Successful Outlook, by Orientate) (C) cost $1.5 million dollars at the KEESEP13 sale. This expensive pretty gray colt is a half to SWEET LULU (by Mr. Greeley), winner of the Test (G-1) and runner up in the Cotillion and La Brea Stakes, both G-1. Iron Fist’s full brother Anchor Down is well-regarded and undefeated in two starts. SUCCESSFUL OUTLOOK won the Tempted S (G-3) as a 2 YO. The second and third dams are stakes placed and the fourth dam is a multiple stakes winner. Iron Fist has a miler/middle distance pedigree.

Saratoga Race 1 | MSW 1 1/16 miles (turf) | 2YO
In one of the first route races for two year olds on the turf, Kamarius sat on the outside, pressing the pace setter Luck of the Kitten. Javier Castellano let the colt run coming out of the turn, and they widened the lead for fun, galloping to a six length victory in 1:43.79. Luck of the Kitten held on for second by a neck over The Truth or Else. KAMARIUS (Candy Ride (ARG) - Eximius (GB), by Atticus) is a half to Honeymoon Handicap (G-2) heroine SARACH (Arch). Their dam placed in a French stakes. She’s a half to the dam of Santa Anita Oaks (G-1) winner TURBULENT DECENT and to the dam of Ruffian Stakes (G-1) heroine SWIFT TEMPER. The second dam GORGEOUS won the Ashland (G-1), Hollywood Oaks, Vanity Invitational (G-1) etc. Third dam KAMAR was Champion 3YO Filly in Canada. Kamarius should stretch out to 1 1/8 miles, and may go longer with maturity. He has class and apparently some ability, so watch for him to point towards the Breeders' Cu’ Juvenile Turf. The horse he beat, Luck of the Kitten (Kitten's Joy - Anura (IRE), by Giant's Causeway), is a full brother to multiple stakes winner EMPIRE BUILDER. His first five dams all own blacktype and the top miler ARAGORN is part of this female family. With racing, Luck of the Kitten should handle 1 ½ miles without drawing a deep breath.

Saratoga Race 3 | 6F | 2YO
THIRTYSILVERPIECES (Badge of Silver - Crumbs of Comfort, by Pulpit) (R) is a half to Tropical Park Derby winner AMEN KITTEN (Kitten’s Joy). This ridgling has a pedigree better suited towards turf. Although his dam did win an allowance on the dirt, her two other on the board placings were over turf. His sire won on both dirt and turf, placing in the BC Mile and winning the San Gabriel (G-2) on turf and the Risen Star and New Orleans ‘Cap on the dirt. Thirtysilverpieces carries the bloodlines of Roberto, Selkirk (highweight older male in Europe), The Minstrel and Sir Ivor. Yes, Ward trains him, but I’ll take a pass.
DA JENIUS (Malibu Moon - Madcap Escapade, by Hennessy) (C) $350K KEESEP13; is a ¾ sister to Del Mar Debutante (G-1) heroine MI SUENO (Pulpit). Their dam won six stakes races, including the Ashland (G-1) Princess Rooney (G-2), and the Forward Gal (G-2), and she was third behind Ashado in the KY Oaks (G-1). Da Jenius’ works are decent, but the Guillot barn is only 5% with FTS.
TODAY'S AGENDA (Monba - Alison's Winner, by Pine Bluff) (C) $180K OBSMAR 14; is a half to Virginia Oaks [G3] winner NELLIE CASHMAN (Mineshaft) and stakes placed Sense of Pride (Lemon Drop Kid). His sire (surprise winner of the Blue Grass) has only 3 winners from 11 starters. The fillies in this line appear to be better competitors than the colts. Both half sisters own blacktype while a half brother has two victories in 12 starts. Both the dam and second dam own blacktype. The Dutrow trainee flashed a good work at Saratoga pre-race.
BAYERD (Speightstown - Cherokee Jewel, by Cherokee Run) $75K FTMMAY14; his half sister won once in 13 attempts, and that was over the turf. His first three dams all own blacktype and the fillies are more accomplished than the colts. That being said, Bayerd’s works have been very quick and Assmusen hits with 19% of his maidens.
CAPTAIN MOSS (Quality Road - Deal of the Decade, by Tiznow) $100K KEESEP13. First Crop sire Quality Road has 3 winners from 8 starters. He’ll likely pass along some speed to his offspring and for the most part, they’ll be of average precocity. One of two of Captain Moss’s siblings was fairly precocious. Captain Moss has a classy female family. His dam is a half to multiple G-1 winner CLEAR MANDATE, who in turn, bore Hopeful hero STRONG MANDATE, as well as stakes winners FULL MANDATE and NEWFOUNDLAND. The second dam DREAM DEAL won the Monmouth Oaks (G-1). Captain Moss’ third dam G-1 winner LIKELY EXCHANGE is a blue hen. She bore Belmont hero CRÈME FRAICHE. Nick Zito gets only 4% winners first time out, but this ccolt fired a pre-race bullet and has been recording excellent works.
COMPETITIVE EDGE (Super Saver - Magdalena's Chase, by Cape Town) (C) $750K FTFMAR14; He’s the first foal produced by his stakes placed dam. Competitive Edge zipped a furlong in :10 flat at the 2YO in training sale. Other than his stakes placed dam, there’s little blacktype in the first three generations of this female family. The colt has been putting in the typical solid works one expects from a Pletcher starter.
Selections:
ALDRIN has been training very well for a high percentage barn. CAPTAIN MOSS has been working very well for a conservative trainer. He could be a surprise. KING RONTOS has experience and that counts for a lot in maiden races. BAYERD has also been working well for a high percentage barn. Add COMPETITIVE EDGE if any of the others scratch.
