On the Track
Given his blue-blooded pedigree, it may seem that
Sightseeing was an underperformer on the track; however he had the misfortune
of belonging to an exceptional crop of three year olds. The three year old crop
of 2007 included Champions Street Sense, Rages to Riches and Curlin, plus the
multiple graded stakes winners Hard Spun and Any Given Saturday.
Pedigree Points
Sightseeing’s
dam Resort (Pleasant Colony - Extravagant Woman, by Alydar) was a late maturing
two year old. She faced the starter twice at the end of the year, winning her
second start. The long-winded filly was an allowance class runner until July of
her three year old season, when she finished second to multiple graded stakes
winner Jostle in the CCA Oaks at 1 ¼ miles. Resort beat Kentucky Oaks heroine
Secret Status in that Grade 1 race. During her career, Resort also placed in the
Gazelle Handicap (G-1), Monmouth Beach Stakes and Turnback the Alarm Handicap
(G-3). She retired with a 19-4-2-4 ($247,730) record.
Resort
bore seven foals of racing age, including the two year old filly Jet Away (by
Mr. Greeley). Two foals are unraced. Despite being bred to some of the best
stallions, Sightseeing is her only foal to earn blacktype. Resort is a half-sister to Brooklyn Handicap
hero Living Vicariously (by Time For A Change) and the multiple graded stakes
veteran With Distinction (by Storm Cat). Two of her half-sisters produced
stakes runners. Sightseeing’s female family includes Kentucky Oaks heroine
Goodbye Halo, who also won the CCA Oaks and the Champion Turf Horse Val’s
Prince. Sightseeing’s third dam Squander was a precocious sort who won the
Astoria and Sorority Stakes (G-2) at two.
His fourth dam Discipline and fifth dam Lady Be Good are blue hens.
Sightseeing’s
damsire Pleasant Colony (His Majesty –
Sun Colony, by Sunrise Flight) was precocious enough to win the Remsen Stakes
(G-2) at two. At three, he won the
Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but his Triple Crown hopes were dashed by Summing
in the Belmont Stakes. Despite this, Pleasant Colony earned Champion Three Year
Old honors. He was a top sire and named an Intermediate Chef-de-race. The
majority of Pleasant Colony’s daughters’ offspring are best beyond a mile.
Notable runners include the Champion Mare Pleasant Home, Grade 1 winning sire
Forestry, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly heroine Cash Run, Grade 1 turf veteran
Marsh Side and the multiple stakes winning veteran Wanderin Boy.
With
Classic Chef-de-races Alydar and Buckpasser as his third and fourth damsires,
Sightseeing has no shortage of stamina through his distaff line.
