Shogood was too good for a full field of eleven two-year-old colts in the Arlington-Washington Futurity, galloping to an easy victory.

Will Munnings leapt to the lead in the first few strides of the Arlington-Washington Futurity. However, Shogood, guided up the rail by jockey Chris Emigh, quickly took command of the Grade 3 event for juveniles. Will Munnings settled into second, with Air America, Missle Bomb and the race favorite, Cocked and Loaded closely bunched behind him.  After setting early fractions of :22.89, :46.34 and 1:10.86, Shogood widened his advantage in the stretch.

The Scott Becker trainee galloped easily under a hand ride to score a decisive two length victory in a final time of 1:24.19 for seven furlongs over fast Polytrack. The 46-1 longshot Van Damme made a late move from fifth place to get up for second, while Missle Bomb overtook a tiring Will Munnings for third.

“He is just naturally fast and powerful. I was sitting on a lot of horsepower,” Emigh said. “I just tried to rein him in and he got around there.”

Shogood returned $6.40, $4.60, $3.80 for the victory and upped his race record to 3-2-1-0 ($81,344). Van Damme lit the tote for $33.00, $14.40 to place; Missle Bomb paid $5.60 to show and Will Munnings was fourth. The $1 exacta paid $115.80, the $0.50 trifecta was $302.55, and the $0.10 Superfecta paid $668.59. Richie the Bull and D. Shifflett were scratches.

Shogood (Nobiz Like Shobiz - Good and Rough, by Good and Tough) was bred by Terry L. Morgan DVM. After the colt’s second place finish in his debut, he was sold privately to William Stiritz.

“We just fell into a good horse. John Wainwright did everything with this horse,” Becker added.

The bay colt is the fourth foal produced by his dam and the first of his siblings to earn blacktype. Shogood’s dam Good and Rough is a half sister to Hoist the Baba, a multiple stakes winning sprinter. Overall, the Illinois-bred colt has a modest female family, but should handle 1 1/16 miles. Often, the next goal of the Arlington-Washington Futurity victor is the Dixiana Breeders Futurity during the Keeneland fall meet.
