The Frontunner Stakes (G-1), formerly known as the Norfolk Stakes, unveiled a new leader in California's Juvenile Colt division. Breaking from post 10, Power Broker raced three wide, rating in third about 1 ½ lengths behind the pace setters. At the top of the stretch he was given his cue by Rafael Bejarano. The chestnut colt took control down the lane, opening up 6 ½ lengths. He traveled the 1 1/6 miles in 1:44.44, just a tick faster than Executivepriviledge, heroine of the the filly counterpart, the Chandelier Stakes.

Previously, Power Broker who won his maiden in the Grade 1 FrontRunner, has led or pressed the pace in two of his three starts, faltering late after setting quick fractions. In his last start, the Bob Baffert trainee was beaten a neck by Dry Summer in the Oak Tree Juvenile Stakes, a one mile event over turf. The Frontrunner was Power Broker's first race over dirt. He avenged his loss to Dry Summer as that rival finished a non-competitive eighth in the Frontrunner.

The FrontRunner Stakes officially kicked off the new Road to the Kentucky Derby. In June, Churchill Downs instituted a new points system to winnow the Derby hopefuls. The Frontrunner Stakes and the Royal Lodge Stakes (Gr. 2), a one mile turf affair at Newmarket, England were held over the weekend. The winners of those races, Power Broker and Steeler, earned ten points in their Kentucky Derby quest. Additionally, the Frontrunner is a Breeders Cup “Win and you're in” challenge race.

With his victory in the FrontRunner Stakes, Power Broker established himself as a legitimate contender for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and a very early Kentucky Derby favorite.

POWER BROKER (Pulpit - Shop Again, by Wild Again) was $360K Keeneland September 2011 Yearling purchase by Gary & Mary West. The chestnut colt is by sire of sires Pulpit, who is tied for second on the general sire list in terms of graded stakes winners this year. Puplit won or placed in five of six starts. His only off the board finish came in the 1997 Kentucky Derby. The gallant colt dueled on the lead for much of the race, but faded to fourth. It was discovered that Pulpit was injured during the race and was subsequently retired.

With over 20 sons at stud internationally, Pulpit is building a reputation as a sire of sires. His sons Tapit, Sky Mesa and Purge have led or been at the top of their respective Freshman Sire lists. Pulpit's offspring win over all surfaces and are generally best up to 1 1/8 miles, however, he is represented by five stakes winners at 1 ¼ miles or farther.

Female Family:
Power Broker's female family is sprinkled with stakes winners. He is the third foal, second to race and first stakes runner produced by his stakes winning dam Shop Again. The bay mare needed 13 starts to win her maiden, sprinting six furlongs over dirt. She won four races, all sprints, including the Ada Stakes at Remington Park and an allowance contest over turf. Shop Again is a half sister to Miss Shop (by Deputy Minister), a multiple graded stakes winner from 1 1/16 miles and 1 ¼ miles. Miss Shop's accomplishments include victories in the Personal Ensign (G-1), Rampart (G-2), Turnback The Alarm (G-3) and Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf.

Shop Again half brother Trappe Shot (by Tapit) won the True North Handicap (G-2) and another half brother Bought In Dixie (by Dixieland Band) is a stakes winner. Power Broker's fourth dam Lady Be Good is a blue hen. Notable runners produced by this distaff line include Vosburgh (G-1) hero Mining, multiple stakes winner Scolara and the English Champions Zilzal, Culture Vulture, and Intikhab.

Dam:
Shop Again (Wild Again - Shopping, by Private Account)
Race Record: 21-4-2-4 ($122,274)

Power Broker carries plenty of stamina in his distaff line. His damsire Wild Again was a multiple graded stakes winner between 1 1/8 to 1 ¼ miles, including a victory in the inaugural 1984 Breeders' Cup Classic. As a broodmare sire, Wild Again is currently #26 on the 2012 Broodmare Sire List in terms of winners. Over 57 of his daughters progeny are stakes winners, including Stephen Foster (G-1) victor Macho Again, Breeders' Cup Marathon (G-2) hero Afleet Again, and Forego Handicap champ Pyro. Power Broker and Pyro are similarly bred, as both are by Pulpit out of Wild Again dams.

Pulpit has ten foals out of Wild Again mares. Seven have started and won, and four own blacktype. Pyro and Power Broker are the only graded stakes winners. Two others have won listed stakes.

Damsire:
Wild Again (Icecapade - Bushel-n-Peck, by Khaled)

Career Highlights:
1st – Breeders' Cup Classic
1st – Meadowlands Cup (G-1)
1st – Oaklawn Handicap (G-2)
1st – New Orleans Handicap (G-2)

More stamina attributes are found through Power Broker's second damsire Private Account (by Damascus), a two-time Grade 1 winner at 1 ¼ miles. Among his top offspring is the undefeated Champion Mare Personal Ensign. Power Broker's third sire is Kentucky Derby/Preakness hero Majestic Prince.

Power Broker is a large, muscular colt, whose physique brings to mind another Baffert trainee, Point Given. Power Broker has the build of a two – turn horse, with a deep, slanted shoulder and powerful hind quarters. His gait is smooth with average extension and no wasted motion. Power Broker has the pedigree to be successful at 1 1/8 miles and beyond. He's already a winner at the distance of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and just as importantly, his victory came over the Santa Anita dirt. Should he finish competitively in the Juvenile, Power Broker could become a powerful opponent on the Triple Crown trail.
