Derby pedigree: The Puma claws his way into contention

The Puma entered the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby as a maiden and exited as an exciting new Kentucky Derby contender.

He shored up that claim in the Florida Derby (G1) when he pounced from the back of the pack to fight the more accomplished Commandment and Chief Wallabee.  In a head-bobbing finish, he failed by only a nose to hold off a late charge from Commandment.

Bred by Hidden Brook Farm and Brian Kahn, The Puma (Essential Quality – Eve of War, by Declaration of War) sold for $150,000 at last year’s OBS April 2-year-olds in training sale to OGMA Investments, JR Ranch and High Step Racing after breezing a furlong in 10.0 seconds.

Conditioned by Gustavo Delgado, The Puma proved he was special from the start. He finished second after a slow start in a maiden special weight at Gulfstream to Chief Wallabee.

Then, The Puma returned to finish third behind Renegade in the listed Sam F. Davis, then bested Further Ado by 3/4 length in the Tampa Bay Derby before giving Commandment all he could handle in the Florida Derby.

Renegade returned to destroy the Arkansas Derby (G1) field by four lengths while Further Ado came home in another ZIP code in the Blue Grass (G1).

The Puma has scratched up a 4: 1-2-1 record with a bankroll of $442,280 and 106 Derby qualifying points.

Sire: Essential Quality

An Eclipse Award champion at both two and three, Essential Quality (Tapit – Delightful Quality, by Elusive Quality) was undefeated in all three starts at two, capping the season with the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

He carried that momentum into his 3-year-old campaign, winning two Derby preps before appearing to give his sire the best shot yet at a Kentucky Derby title, only for the streak to end with a fourth-place finish, though he was later elevated to third following the disqualification of Medina Spirit.

He bounced back emphatically, sweeping the Belmont (G1), Jim Dandy (G2), and Travers (G1) to prove his stamina across classic distances, before finishing third behind Knicks Go and Medina Spirit in the Breeders' Cup Classic. In doing so, he joined just Lookin At Lucky (2009-10) and American Pharoah (2014-15) as the only horses this century to earn Eclipse Awards as the top male of their generation at both two and three.

Essential Quality is making his mark in the breeding shed, too. Currently number two on the second-crop leaderboard by both earnings and black type performers, so far, his babies have been successful to 1 1/16 miles. Five of his ten runners at 1 1/8 miles have placed second through fourth, mainly in stakes.

Given Tapit's legacy as a leading North American sire, one whose influence extends through multiple successful sons at classic distances, there's every reason to believe Essential Quality can follow that path.

Female family

The Puma has 4 x 6 breeding to the Reine-de-Course (superior female) Ruby Slippers, a daughter of Nijinsky. She is Tapit’s second dam, and the dam of Rubiano, the sire of War Front, who, in turn, is Declaration of War’s sire.

The Puma’s distaff line leans more towards miler speed than stamina. He is the first foal out of Eve of War (Declaration of War – Special Thanks, by Broken Vow), who won in maiden special weight and allowance company and finished third in the 1 1/16-mile Monmouth Oaks (G3) in 2020.

The family's standout performer appears further back in the pedigree: third dam Bedanken, by the Theatrical mare Geri, was a remarkably talented mare successful from six furlongs to 1 3/16 miles over dirt and turf.

She won 11 races, nine at black-type level, including the 2002 Honeybee Stakes (G3) on dirt as well as the 2002 Valley View Stakes (G3), 2004 Modesty Handicap (G3) and 2004 Bayou Breeders' Cup Handicap (G3) on grass.

Bedanken's producing record has been modest by comparison; just one of her nine winners, Missive, earned black type. She finished third in the 2018 Silverbulletday Stakes.

A brighter spot has emerged through her daughter, Keep Your Promise (Broken Vow), whose son Speed Merchant has been a standout in New Mexico-bred company, winning five of seven starts, including the 2025 New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Futurity.

Damsire: Declaration of War

The royally-bred Declaration of War is by the solid Claiborne stallion War Front out of Tempo West, a Rahy half-sister to Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags.

Declaration of War is a versatile, top-class performer who proved himself across distances and surfaces. He broke his maiden on synthetic before blossoming into a formidable turf campaigner, taking the one-mile Queen Anne (G1) and the 1 5/16 mile Juddmonte International (G1). He signed off in style on dirt, falling just a head short in a dramatic three-way photo finish in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Classic.

As a young damsire, he has only 187 starters. 107 are winners, with seven stakes winners.

Kentucky Derby contender or pretender?

The Florida Derby has produced more winners in Kentucky than any other prep. Four Florida Derby runner-ups went on to win the Kentucky Derby, including Sovereignty and Mage (2023).

The Puma has a middle distance to classic pedigree and conformation. He ran down Further Ado in the Tampa Derby but couldn’t hold off Commandment’s late charge in the Florida Derby. However, The Puma may not have seen Commandment coming, and The Puma’s final 12.70-second final furlong is within the norms of previous Kentucky Derby winners.

The Puma didn’t start his career until January, but he has four starts under his girth, so he should have the foundation to handle 1 1/4 miles.

The Puma and Mage are owned and trained by the same connections. Like The Puma, Mage began his career in January but had only three starts entering the Derby. Can lightning strike twice?
