Kentucky Derby 2015 - Calculator Pedigree Profile

CALCULATOR has been a model of consistency and class while chasing American Pharaoh in the Del Mar Futurity and Frontrunner Stakes, both G-1 events. With that rival sidelined, Calculator finally got a chance to shine in the Sham Stakes, easily conquering an over-matched group by 4 ½ lengths in 1:34.88, just a blink off of the stakes record of 1:34.56 set by Out of Bounds in 2012.

The Florida-bred colt was sold by Ocala Stud for $132,000 at the 2014 OBS April Two Year Olds in Training auction after breezing two furlongs in :21.1.  Owner Richard Pell sent Calculator to Peter Miller, considered by many to be one of the top California trainers of juveniles. With Miller’s conditioning, Calculator (In Summation - Back to Basics, by Alphabet Soup) has added up a race record of 5-1-2-1 and earnings of $193,500.

Sire:
In Summation raced for five years as a sprinter, competing from Florida to Canada to California.  The Florida-bred, naturally enough, started his career at Calder. Bred by predominant Florida horseman Arthur Appleton, In Summation quickly jumped into stakes competition, winning his next four races, two of which were legs of the Florida Stallion Stakes. Poised to sweep the series, In Summation's undefeated five-race win streak came to an end in the 1 1/16 mile In Reality, where he was beaten a bare nose.

The Cristophe Clement trainee didn't visit the winner's circle again until he was four. In Summation earned his first Grade 1 victory in the Bing Crosby Handicap over the Del Mar Polytrack, setting a new track record for six furlongs in 1:11.06. He continued to win or place in six more graded stakes contests in his career.  In Summation won over dirt, mud, turf, Polytrack, Pro-Ride and placed on Cushion Track. He set new course records at Del Mar, Santa Anita (two), and at Monmouth Park.  The swift son of Put It Back had a race named in his honor at now-defunct Calder Racecourse.

In 2010, In Summation retired to Ocala Stud Farm in Florida and currently stands for a $2,500 fee. Calculator is his first graded stakes winner.  In Summation hails from the powerful sprinter/miler sire line of In Reality and passes along these sprint genes. Like their sire, In Summation’s babies are capable runners over all surfaces.  None of In Summation’s stakes progeny have won past a mile.

Female Family:
To offset the speed genes Calculator received from his sire, the gray colt’s distaff line carries strong stamina lines and class.  Calculator is the third foal of racing age produced by his unraced dam Back to Basics. One other half sibling, Basic Values (Exchange Rate) has raced and won. Back to Basics has a two year old Kantharos filly and yearling colt by Overdriven.  All of her foals are gray.

Back to Basics is a half sister to the veteran turf sprinter ATTICUS KRISTY (Atticus), who won or placed in 17 stakes races in 76 starts.  His full sister FIERY DANCER won the one mile Pago Hop Stakes over the lawn.  Back to Basics is also a half sister to DISTORTED REALITY (Distorted Humor) who won the 1 ¼ mile Academy Award Stakes, the 1 1/8 mile Lexington and placed in three graded stakes all over the lawn. Another half sister, Myriad (Ghostzapper), was third in a four horse field in the Pago Hop, ten lengths behind the good mare Believe You Can.

There’s some back class in Calculator’s pedigree.  His second dam is a half sister to the multiple stakes placed With Every Wish (Lear Fan).  That mare is the grand-dam dam of Preakness champ and new sire SHACKLEFORD and his Grade 1 winning half sister LADY JOANNE, who captured the Alabama Stakes at 1 ¼ miles.

Calculator’s fourth dam Taminette is a blue hen, a full sister to champion miler and top sire Known Fact, and a half sister to the blue hen Secrettame, the dam of Gone West.  Taminette is also and a half sister to grade I winner and sire Tentam.

Damsire:
The large, gray Alphabet Soup spent most of his career winning at the grade two and grade three levels, mostly at 1 1/8 miles, although he did win the Pat O’Brian Handicap at seven panels.  In one of the most exciting renditions of the Breeders’ Cup Classic Stakes in the history of the race, Alphabet Soup shocked the racing world in a blanket finish, nosing out Louis Quatorze and the invincible Cigar for the victory, while Mt. Sassafras was ½ length back in fourth.

ALPHABET SOUP (Cozzene - Illiterate, by Arts and Letters)
Race record: 24-10-3-6 ($2,990,270)

Career highlights:
1st – Breeders’ Cup Classic (G-1) 1 ¼ miles
1st - San Antonio Handicap (G-2) 1 1/8 miles
1st – Pat O’Brian Handicap (G-2) 7F
1st – San Pasqual Handicap (G-2) 1 1/8 miles
1st – Del Mar BC Handicap (G-2) 1 mile
1st – Native Diver Handicap (G-3) 1 1/8 miles

Alphabet Soup has been a mainstay stallion at Adina Springs Stud for many years. He’s a solid breed to race sire, getting competitive runners that stick around. His offspring include Alpha Bettor and Phantom Light, both proclaimed Older Male Sovereign Award winners in Canada, plus LaBrea Stakes (G-1) heroine Alphabet Kisses and Matriarch (G-1) winner Egg Drop.  As a broodmare sire, Alphabet Soup is represented by 12 stakes winners, however, only one, Salustio, a listed winner in Venezuela, is a winner at 1 ¼ miles. What’s intriguing about Salustio is that his sire, Why Why Why is noted for getting sprinter/miler types.

Calculator’s second damsire Unbridled is classified as a Brilliant/Intermediate Chef-de-Race, contributing sprint/middle distance attributes to his offspring.  As a broodmare sire, Unbridled’s stamina oriented genes come into play.  He’s the damsire of ten stakes winners at 1 ¼ miles or farther, including 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb, last year’s Belmont Derby Invitational (G-1) winner Mr. Speaker Arunda, 2012 heroine of the 1 3/8 mile Sheepshead Bay Handicap (G-2) and of course, the afore mentioned Lady Joanne.

Calculator is the only In Summation foal out of an Alphabet Soup mare. In Summation’s sire Put it Back has an affinity for the Cozzene line. He’s had success with this cross, having produced two starters, both winners with total earnings of $197,261 from Alphabet Soup mares and the same accomplishment with Cozzene mares, both foals earning a combined $96,223.

Outlook:
Calculator doesn’t have a pretty gallop. His stride down the stretch of the Sham Stakes was choppy with slightly high knee action.  He had trouble keeping a straight line, wanting to bear out, most likely due to noticeable paddling with his left fore. In the stretch of the Sham Stakes, we can see Elvis Trujillo tapping the colt on the right side to keep Calculator straight.

The colt is large and heavy, with a thick neck and slightly upright shoulder angle. He has good bone and an overall powerful appearance. Calculator favors his dam and damsire in the looks department, although his shoulder appears slightly more upright than Alphabet Soup’s.

Calculator has a speed over stamina pedigree. His pedigree resembles that of Shackleford (Forestry) and Lady Joanne (Orientate) as both are by sprint sires out of mares with stout bloodlines. However, Calculator’s stride and conformation may play against him going longer. He’s a nice horse, and is starting to mature at the right time.  He didn’t have much competition in the Sham Stakes, but his physical attributes and pedigree could be his downfall going longer against top competition.  1 1/8 miles may be at the top of his scope.

Despite this, keep Calculator on your watch lists for the Derby preps as he should add depth to the upcoming California Stakes races.  According to trainer Peter Miller, Calculator will target the Robert B. Lewis Stakes on February 7.
