Rise Up lived up to his
name in Saturday’s Delta Downs
Jackpot Stakes (G-3), setting a new stakes record while showing his heels
to the rest of the field. Jockey Gerard Melancon
settled the colt comfortably on the lead for most of the race. The bay colt ran
away from his competitors in the stretch, flashing under the wire an easy six
length winner. The final time of 1:44.71 for the 1 1/16 mile race is a new
stakes record, beating Big Drama’s record of 1:44.72 by less than an
eyeblink. Under the new Kentyucky Derby
points system, Rise Up earned ten points
and is in a five-way tie for thrid place on the leaderboard.
With his victory in the Delta
Downs Jackpot, the Tom Amoss
trainee added another stakes race to his expanding resume. He’s won each of his four starts on the lead
by daylight, including victories in the Mountaineer
Juvenile Stakes and Jean Lafitte Stakes.
His lone off the board finish
came in the Iroquois Stakes (G-3) at Churchill.
RISE UP (Rockport
Harbor - Appenzell, by Johannesburg) failed to meet his $27K reserve at last
year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale. After his dominating 4 ½ length victory in the
Mountaineer Juvenile Stakes, Rise Up was purchased privately by Paul and
Andrena Van Doren from Blazing Meadows Farm and Cottonwood Stables. He has compiled an eye-catching 6-4-1-0 ($810,633)
race record.
Sire:
Rise
Up is by the fourth year sire Rockport
Harbor. The pretty gray colt’s name was on everybody’s radar as a colt to watch
on the Kentucky Derby trail after resounding victories in the Remsen and
Nashua Stakes. The son of Unbridled’s
Song missed most of his three year old season due to an old leg injury which
was sustained the previousl year in the Remsen Stakes. He started his four year old season
outclassing rivals in the Essex Handicap (G-3), but reinjured his leg in the
Razerback Handicap (G-3). Rockport
Harbor retired with a 8-5-1-0 ($324,800) record.
The imposing 16.2 hands
high stallion was well supported at Darly Stud in his first three seasons,
standing originally for a $12,500 fee. In only four racing crops, Rockport
Harbor has sired eight graded stakes winners and 12 stakes winners. Typically,
sons of Unbridled’s Song average around 10 – 15% two year old winners; however,
Rockport Harbor was a bit more precocious, procuring 21% juvenile winners. His
damsire Copelan was noted for siring win-earyly types. Rockport Harbor’s stakes
winners include Ria Antonia, the recent long-shot winner of this year’s
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G-1), multiple G-3 heroine May Day Rose, and
last year’s Arlington-Washington Futurity Stakes (G-3) winner Pataky Kid. Tragicaly, Rockport Harbor had to be put down
in August due to complications arising from laminitis.

Female Family:
Rise
Up’s dam Appenzell ( Johannesburg - Bourbon Blues, by Seeking the Gold) won her maiden at first asking and was a
claiming class dirt sprinter who placed going a mile 70 yards. She was a study runner earning $44,151 with a
13-2-0-5 record. She had strong turf influences in her pedigree but was never
given the opportunity to try the lawn. Rise
Up is her second foal and first to earn blacktype. Appenzell has a yearling Tiz Wonderful filly
and a Tiznow weanling. She’s a half sister
to the multiple stakes placed Old Fashion Girl (by Arch). That one is the dam of the multiple stakes
winning turf filly In The Rough (by Stormy Atlantic).
Rise
Up’ssecond dam Bourbon Blues doesn’t own any black type, but his third dam,
Beal Street Blues (by Dixieland Band) won the Del Mar Debutante. She’s a full
sister to Dixieland Brass, hero of the Fountain of Youth (G-2) and Hutcheson Stakes
(G-3).
Damsire:
Johannesburg
is a young broodmare sire, represented by only five stakes winners. Rise Up is
the only one to have won past a mile.
Rockport
Harbor has two foals out of Johannesburg mares. Both are winners and one owns
blacktype.
Outlook:
Rise
Up runs with his head cocked to the side. He prefers to relax on the lead and
doesn’t seem bothered when other colts run with him. He has a quick leg action
without excess movement, but tends to drift. This could be simple inexperience.
There’s
no doubt that Rise Up is a talented youngster who has been beating up on lesser
colts. Previous Delta Jackpot winners
haven’t stamped themselves as Classic contenders. In fact, the best two colt to
have captured the race, Big Drama and Goldencents, became quality
sprinter/milers. Rise Up doesn’t have a classic pedigree. His sire so far has
one stakes winner at 1 1/8 miles, none farther. Had he llived, Rockport Harbor
may have produced a winner at 1 ¼ miles, but it would have been an anomaly. Johannesburg has sired four
winners at 1 ¼ miles – all over the turf. Rise Up has shown his prowness over dirt, but
he also has a good turf pedigree. If things don’t pan out for him on dirt, we
could see a surface switch.
