2014 Kentucky Derby Contender Injury/Setbacks List

An update on 2014 Kentucky Derby contenders that are off of the trail, had setbacks or haven’t breezed in a month, as of March 14, 2014.

 

 
INJURED and off the trail
New Year’s Day – retired with a sesamoid  injury in December 2013.
 
Electric Eddie – suffered condylar fracture during the California Cup Derby.
 
Shared Belief – grabbed a quarter in 2013, worked once in January. Moved to Golden Gate and reported to be galloping, but trainer Hollendorfer announced that the horse won’t contest the Spiral.
 
Exit Stage Left - the California Derby winner was taken off the trail after suffering an injury in a workout preparing for the El Camino Real Derby.
 

Top Billing – fractured cannon bone during a workout – will be out of commission for at least four months.

 
Walt – The son of Runaway and Hide hasn’t recorded a breeze since his seventh place finish in the Southwest Stakes and was injured.  Trainer Chris Hartman reports that the colt is off of the Derby trail.   
 
 
 
SETBACKS
Bond Holder – fourth in the Cash Call Futurity, the Doug O’Neil trainee hasn’t breezed since February 14. Still suffering from a foot injury sustained in a plane flight to Louisiana. He was scratched from the Risen Star.  Son of Mineshaft was supposed to contend the Tampa Bay Derby, but was a no show.  He remains at Tampa Bay Downs and his next start is undetermined.
 
Havana – the Champagne winner was scratched out of the Swale Stakes due to a quarter crack. 
 
 
 
MIA
Smarty's Echo - #37 in the Kentucky Derby Points standings, he finished last in the LeComte Stakes on January 18.  He’s had no recorded post-race breezes.
 
 
 
UPDATES
Ami's Holiday – Winner of the Gray Stakes started breezing on February 20 at Oaklawn. Last recorded work was on March 14, 5F 1:03.40 (20/30).
 
Cleburne  – Iroquois Stakes winner bucked shins in October. He resumed breezing at Gulfstream. Latest work was March 8, 5F 101.17 (16/42).
 
Honor Code – back in action. Finished a distant second in an allowance race on March 12. Was uncharastically lathered, difficult to handle and didn’t want to load into the gate. Trainer Shug McGaughey stated that the Florida Derby and Wood Memorial remain under consideration.
 
Laddie Boy – Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes runner-up was fifth the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, which was his three year old debut. He recorded a post-race breeze of 4F 50.80 (4/7)  on March 11. We may see him in the Spiral.
 

Smart Cover - Iroquois Stakes runner-up stumbled at the start of the Palm Beach Stakes held on March 1 and finished in eleventh place.
